TV-Series
Description
Bunshichi Tawara is a twenty-year-old senior at Toudou Academy who has somehow remained a student for three years without graduating. Far from being unintelligent, he blames his prolonged stay on the traumatic incident involving his friend Shin Natsume, which he claims ruined his ideal school life. He comes from a family that runs a rice shop, where he helps out, and his parents are relatively young, having had him at an early age.
In terms of personality, Bunshichi presents a facade of laziness and perversion, often focusing his attention on women with large breasts, which he refers to as deadly weapons. He frequently makes crude jokes, including threatening remarks of a sexual nature, though these are understood to be expressions of his perverse sense of humor rather than genuine intentions, as he has never acted on them. Despite his formidable power, he is frequently used as comic relief, with his lack of motivation and inappropriate behavior serving as the primary sources of humor. He often disguises intelligent moves as humor, such as when he interrupted a fight by pouring water on Mitsuomi Takayanagi, an act that seemed silly but actually served a strategic purpose.
Bunshichi's motivations are driven by a desire to avoid conflict and school politics whenever possible. After being forced to fight his friend Shin and witnessing the breakup of their gang Katana, he developed a strong preference for staying on the sidelines. He joined the original Juken Club solely so the group would have enough members to compete in the election tournament, and later accepted a position as advisor and strategist for the Executive Council only in name, claiming he does nothing and signed up merely for the title. Despite his immense power, he avoids entering fights and sees no sense in training to be stronger than someone else.
Bunshichi's role in the story is that of a reluctant powerhouse who operates largely on his own terms. He is a member of both the early Juken Club and the Executive Council, though he maintains allegiance to neither in any meaningful sense. Emi Isuzu even refers to him as a potential enemy despite his official position on the Council. He occasionally serves as a mentor figure to younger characters, with Kōji Sagara entrusting him with his mask, Kagesada Sugano hovering around him for guidance, and Masataka Takayanagi looking up to him. He also plays a crucial role in the flashback arc, where his history with Shin Natsume and Mitsuomi Takayanagi is explored.
Bunshichi shares significant relationships with several key characters. He was a close friend of Shin Natsume and Mitsuomi Takayanagi, having been the vice president of Team Katana and commander of the gang's special forces. During the flashback arc, he discovered that Maya Natsume was the mysterious Katana hunter but chose to hide this information from others, fearing the repercussions from the unstable Shin. He also has a memorable dynamic with Emi Isuzu, whom he once chased while making inappropriate demands, leading to her stabbing him in the hand.
In terms of development, Bunshichi remains largely static throughout the series, having already achieved his peak strength before the main storyline begins. He was once ranked as the strongest fighter in Toudou Academy until Mitsuomi won the tournament two years prior, though it is noted that Bunshichi did not fight in that tournament, resulting in Mitsuomi being ranked higher by default. He earned the title God of Fighting during his time as commander of Katana's Special Forces, where he single-handedly defeated all of the gang's enemies. In the most recent chapters of the manga, it is revealed that Bunshichi could have killed Mitsuomi, considered the top fighter in the series, during their fight but held back.
Bunshichi's notable abilities set him apart from other characters in the series. He possesses no formal martial arts style, relying instead on boxing and street fighting methods. Despite this lack of formal training, he is one of the most powerful characters, capable of defeating any formal martial artist with ease. He jokingly refers to himself as Exorcist Tawara because even people with special powers cannot defeat him. In addition to his physical prowess, he is extremely intelligent and analytical during battle, functioning as a brilliant strategist. Mitsuomi himself points out that if Bunshichi had led the affairs at the bowling alley, the Juken Club would have been completely destroyed.
Bunshichi possesses immense physical strength, proven by his ability to punch a car over his head and knock an undead Fu Chi'en down the road with little effort. He is called Double Impact Tawara because he typically relies on his extremely powerful arms in battle, though his legs are equally strong. When he enters combat, he can increase the size of his arms, usually shredding the sleeves of his shirt in the process, likely by focusing monstrous amounts of chi into the muscles. His most powerful ability is a rage state that he can activate at will, which occurs when he faces what he perceives as a life-threatening situation. In this state, his hair spikes up, his eyes glow bright red, and his ki surrounds his body, making contact with whatever he hits instead of his actual fist. In this form, he is arguably the most powerful character in the series and has complete control over the technique, unlike Masataka Takayanagi who possesses a similar ability but lacks control.
