Description
Nana, also known as Silpelit Number 7, is a young Diclonius who appears as a main character in Elfen Lied. Her name is the Japanese word for seven, reflecting her designation at the research facility. Due to the rapid aging characteristic of Silpelits, she has the physical appearance of a girl between twelve and fourteen years old, though her actual age is approximately six. She was born at the Diclonius Research Institute and was one of the few Diclonius not euthanized at birth, instead becoming a subject of often brutal experiments.

Nana’s personality stands in stark contrast to that of the primary Diclonius, Lucy. Where Lucy is typically serious, cold, and homicidal, Nana is friendly, kind, and empathetic. She displays an innocent and nurturing disposition, and she genuinely wants to make others smile. This gentle nature is a direct result of the kindness shown to her by Professor Kurama, the head researcher at the institute. Kurama treated Nana as a surrogate daughter, and she affectionately calls him Papa. Because of his influence, she was taught never to use her vectors to kill humans, and she does not harbor the vengeful hatred that many other Diclonius feel toward humanity. However, Nana is not without complexity; on rare occasions, she enters a trance-like state in which her demeanor becomes colder and more serious, resembling Lucy’s default personality.

Her motivations are rooted in a desire for acceptance and a wish to prove herself worthy of Kurama’s love. This drive leads her to take risks, most notably when she disobeys Kurama’s instructions during the mission to recapture Lucy. Instead of simply locating Lucy and retreating for backup, Nana attempts to capture Lucy on her own to impress her father figure. This results in a brutal confrontation in which Lucy uses her vectors to dismember Nana, tearing off all her limbs. Nana is saved only by the intervention of Kurama and a team of soldiers. Following this incident, Director Kakuzawa orders Nana to be euthanized, but Kurama disobeys and instead provides her with prosthetic limbs that she can control with her vectors, as well as a large sum of money, before secretly setting her free.

After being released, Nana initially struggles to understand the outside world. She does not realize the value of money and burns some of it to keep warm, only learning her mistake after meeting the runaway Mayu. Nana later confronts Lucy again, this time when Lucy is in her childlike Nyu personality. Throughout the story, Nana’s role is that of a foil to Lucy and a living example that a Diclonius’s behavior is shaped by its environment rather than by instinct alone. She demonstrates that kindness can prevent the homicidal tendencies seen in others.

Key relationships include her bond with Kurama, which is the foundation of her moral compass; her adversarial yet complex encounters with Lucy, which highlight the divergence in their paths; and her growing friendship with Mayu and the group around Kouta, which helps her adjust to a life beyond the institute. Her development involves learning to live independently, overcoming the trauma of her dismemberment, and gradually finding her place among humans who accept her.

Nana possesses the telekinetic vectors common to all Diclonius. These invisible arms can grasp, manipulate, and slice objects, and they are also capable of transmitting the Diclonius virus to human males through contact. Her vectors have a longer reach than Lucy’s, extending up to about three meters, and she can use them to disable the vectors of other Diclonius by striking their pineal gland, temporarily neutralizing their powers. Despite this advantage in range, Nana lacks Lucy’s raw strength and cannot lift or throw objects of comparable weight. Because of her empathetic nature, she is also less willing to fight lethally, which puts her at a disadvantage in combat. After losing her natural limbs, she learns to manipulate her prosthetic arms and legs with her vectors, and she can even detach and throw them as makeshift projectiles. These capabilities, combined with her innate ability to sense other Diclonius, define her as a unique and significant character in the story.
