Description
Mariko Kurama, also known as Number 35, is a third-generation Diclonius and the biological daughter of Professor Kurama and his late wife Hiromi. Her mother died shortly after childbirth due to complications from cervical cancer. Mariko was born a Silpelit after her father was infected by the vectors of a young Diclonius during an escape attempt. From infancy, she was imprisoned in a steel container within the Diclonius research facility, isolated from all human contact except for a scientist who communicated through speakers and monitors. This lifelong confinement left her physically underdeveloped, with atrophied legs that require a wheelchair when she is finally allowed outside her cell.
In personality, Mariko is extremely homicidal and sadistic, taking genuine pleasure in torturing and dismembering her victims. Her cruelty is not driven by malice but by a childlike, playful attitude; she treats violence as a game and lacks any moral framework to distinguish right from wrong. Despite her isolation, she is psychologically articulate and capable of complex thought. Deep down, she craves the love and acknowledgment of her father, Kurama, and her actions are motivated by a desperate need for his affection. She wants him to grieve for her and to see her as worthy.
Mariko's role in the story is that of a powerful antagonist deployed by the research facility to eliminate Lucy. She is introduced in the latter half of the anime as the facility's ultimate weapon. Because of her immense power, she is kept in a special containment room and only released after a bomb implanted in her body is detonated to blow off her right arm, demonstrating the institute's control over her. She engages Lucy in a brutal battle, initially overwhelming her with the sheer number and reach of her vectors. However, she is eventually defeated when Lucy severs one of her horns, rendering her unconscious.
Her key relationships are primarily with her father, Professor Kurama, whom she both fears and idolizes. She also has a brief, tense encounter with Nana, another Diclonius who tries to show her kindness, but Mariko rejects it, viewing Nana's empathy as weakness. Her adversary is Lucy, whom she sees as a rival for her father's attention and a target she must destroy to prove her worth.
Mariko experiences a significant moment of development in her final scene. After being defeated, Kurama finally shows her the fatherly affection she always sought, holding her in his arms and apologizing. In that moment, she achieves a fragile, tragic contentment before he detonates the bomb inside her, killing both of them. This act is both an execution and an expression of his hidden love, as he sacrifices himself to prevent further destruction and to atone for his inability to protect her.
Notable abilities: Mariko possesses the highest number of telekinetic vectors of any recorded Diclonius. In the anime, she has over thirty invisible arms, each with a range of approximately eleven meters. This immense reach and volume allow her to attack from a distance, shredding multiple targets simultaneously with surgical precision. She also has at least two bombs implanted in her body as a failsafe, one of which is used to sever her own arm to enforce obedience and the other detonated to end her life. Despite her physical frailty, her powers make her the most dangerous Diclonius encountered in the series.
