Description
Karura, also known as Karura-ō, is a divine general and the leader of the Karura tribe, a clan known for its powerful warriors and a symbolic bond with large birds, such as her own companion, Garuda. She is a friend and ally to Yasha-ō, one of the main protagonists, and shares his desire to see the tyrannical emperor Taishakuten overthrown. However, her position as a general serving directly under the emperor, a role she holds for hundreds of years, places her in an immensely difficult and conflicted position. White-haired with blue eyes, her appearance as an adult female is often accompanied by the great bird that signifies her status.

Initially, Karura’s primary motivation is not rebellion but the protection of her younger sister, Karyoubinga. She remains loyal to Emperor Taishakuten’s regime not out of agreement with his cruel reign, but because her sister is essentially kept as a hostage, ensuring the Karura clan’s compliance. This deep devotion to her family defines her early personality; she is a formidable and capable leader, but her actions are restrained by her love and fear for her sister’s safety. Her loyalty is a pragmatic and painful choice rather than a willing one.

The event that fundamentally changes Karura is the death of her sister at the hands of Taishakuten. Following this loss, she is consumed by grief, withdrawing from the world and refusing to eat or sleep. Another character, the musician Kendappa-ō, helps revive Karura’s spirit. When Karura appears before Taishakuten, hoping at least to recover her sister’s remains, the emperor reveals his ultimate cruelty: he fed Karyoubinga’s body to his pet beasts. Karura’s grief turns into an uncontrollable rage, causing her to attack the emperor in his own court, an act that forces her to be banished.

Following this confrontation, Karura makes a conscious decision to rebel. She fakes her own death to protect her tribe from imperial retribution and secretly leaves her domain to join Yasha-ō and Ashura’s quest to gather the Six Stars, a prophesied group fated to challenge the heavens. This marks her full transition from a reluctant general serving a tyrant to an active agent of rebellion seeking vengeance. Her role in the story is therefore that of a powerful and tragic figure who must sacrifice her position and her old life to pursue justice for her sister.

Karura shares a significant relationship with Kendappa-ō, who is a source of comfort and strength during her darkest moments. She also has a connection with her superior, Bishamonten, who intervenes to prevent her from being executed after she attacks Taishakuten. Her development is a poignant one: she transforms from a passive figure of power, bound by duty and familial love, into an active warrior who chooses defiance over bitter servitude. Her abilities are notable, as she is counted among the divine generals and is recognized as one of the powerful Six Stars, possessing considerable combat skills and the unique bond with her avian companion, Garuda.
