Description
Nathan Adams, commonly known as Nate, is the main protagonist of the Yo-kai Watch anime. He is an eleven-year-old fifth-grade student living in the town of Springdale. Nate is portrayed as an active and cheerful boy who is generally well-liked by his classmates, though he is frequently described by others as exceedingly average, a label he strongly dislikes. He had always wished for something extraordinary to happen in his life, and that wish is fulfilled when he releases the Yo-kai Whisper from a stone capsule in the woods, receiving a special device called the Yo-kai Watch. This watch grants him the ability to see, befriend, and summon supernatural spirits known as Yo-kai, which are invisible to most humans.
Nate's main motivation throughout the series is to prove that he is anything but ordinary, often going to great lengths to impress his kind and popular classmate Katie Forester, on whom he has a long-standing crush. He also strives to resolve the everyday problems caused by Yo-kai inspiriting humans, which frequently leads to embarrassing situations for himself and others. As the primary wielder of the Yo-kai Watch, Nate serves as the central human figure bridging the human world and the Yo-kai world, taking on threats such as the Wicked Yo-kai, McKraken, and other powerful antagonists.
His key relationships include his constant companion Whisper, a self-proclaimed Yo-kai butler who educates Nate about Yo-kai despite often relying on his Yo-kai Pad for information. His first befriended Yo-kai is Jibanyan, the spirit of a cat who becomes a loyal and comedic partner. Nate also maintains friendships with his human classmates Eddie and Bear. Over the course of the story, Nate develops from a boy who views Yo-kai as mere nuisances into a compassionate mediator and defender of both worlds. He masters various iterations of the Yo-kai Watch, including the Model Zero and the Yo-kai Watch Dream, and learns to use them to summon Yo-kai in battle through their Yo-kai Medals. In later installments, such as the Shadowside arc, an adult Nate is shown to have married Katie and become the father of two children, Natsume and Keisuke, passing on the legacy of the Yo-kai Watch.
