Description
Jinmenken, known in English localization as Manjimutt, is a Yo-kai whose very form reflects a tragic and bizarre fusion. In life, he was a human salaryman who, after being fired from a company he worked for over thirty years, went out drinking to drown his sorrows. In a drunken accident, he stumbled into a pile of wooden planks at the same moment a brown toy poodle approached him. The planks fell, killing both man and dog and merging their spirits into a single, unfortunate Yo-kai. This origin explains his most striking feature: a chocolate brown poodle's body topped with the weary, bespectacled face of a middle-aged man.
Personality is the core of Jinmenken's character, and it is defined by a deep, melancholic lament for his afterlife. His primary wish was to be treated as an adorable dog, but he finds that people and other Yo-kai simply see him as a strange-looking man. This disappointment, compounded by his humiliating dismissal from his job, gives him a low sense of self-worth and a naturally pessimistic outlook. He often frequents a street-side bar, his self-proclaimed home, where he drinks and bemoans his situation. Despite this pervasive sadness, Jinmenken possesses a surprising, if often misguided, work ethic. He is perpetually on a quest to find his place in the world, leading him to try his hand at a staggering variety of professions, including photographer, pottery sculptor, patisserie apprentice, and hairdresser. Unfortunately, these efforts almost never succeed. His canine instincts frequently betray him, compelling him to urinate on public property and steal food. More problematically, he has difficulty restraining his lust for women, a perverse trait that, combined with his other failings, almost always results in him being fired and swiftly arrested.
His role in the story is primarily that of an unlikely and problematic ally to the human protagonist. While Jinmenken desperately wants to be a cute and beloved pet, his unsettling appearance and grown-man voice usually frighten people. He is not malicious, but he is incompetent, and his presence often creates more problems than it solves. Nevertheless, he can be called upon to fight, and his physical abilities should not be underestimated. He is a decent hand-to-hand combatant, able to match a delinquent Yo-kai like Roughraff in a brawl, and his Soultimate Move, Creepy Superbite, involves biting enemies in a frenzy. A unique and often comedic aspect of Jinmenken is that, due to the circumstances of his death, he is visible to ordinary humans without the need for a Yo-kai Watch, which is why he is constantly being spotted, reported, and arrested by the police. He is a regular at the local prison, and his repeated arrests and attempts to escape, both on his own and when inadvertently summoned by the hero, are a recurring source of trouble.
Key relationships are often formed through these cycles of conflict and reluctant cooperation. His most significant bond is with the main protagonist, who is one of the few individuals to treat him with a degree of trust and respect, once calling him an adult he could rely on in a dire moment. This summons often pulls Jinmenken out of prison, interrupting his latest escape attempt and leading to temporary cooperation. He has a notable rivalry-turned-friendship with the delinquent Yo-kai Roughraff, after a tough fight between them ended in mutual respect. His most persistent antagonist, however, is the Japanese police force, who are utterly unconvinced by his claims of being a dog and seem perpetually ready to haul him away.
Jinmenken does experience some development, though it is often cyclical. While his default state is one of self-pity, moments arise where he is spurred to action, proving his courage and fighting spirit. His relentless, if failed, job hunts demonstrate a dogged refusal to simply give up on his afterlife. Over time, he evolves from a simple, pitiable ghost into a more complex figure of tragicomedy, embodying the pathos of a defeated middle-aged man trapped in a world that won't accept him as either human or pet. His abilities are a strange mix of the ghostly and the all-too-real. Beyond his fighting skills and being permanently visible, he has a Fire attribute, allowing him to use techniques like a small blaze. In some appearances, his bite has the alarming ability to transform others into human-faced dogs. His Inspirit move, Confusion, can startle a foe into attacking their own allies, a power that mirrors the chaotic and socially disruptive nature of his own existence.
