Description
Detective Shunsaku Ban is a central figure in the 2001 anime film Metropolis. He is a private investigator from Japan who travels to the futuristic, sprawling city of Metropolis on a specific assignment: to apprehend a scientist named Dr. Laughton, who is wanted for illegal organ trafficking.

In terms of appearance, Ban is a middle-aged, portly man who is typically seen wearing a traditional detective's coat and hat, a style reminiscent of classic literary detectives like Sherlock Holmes. His most distinctive features are his bald head and his large, bushy mustache. His demeanor blends the qualities of a classic, slightly old-fashioned investigator with an unexpectedly caring nature. While he can display moments of comic panic or become winded when forced to run, he is fundamentally a competent and courageous individual who approaches problems by looking at them from a different angle.

Ban’s motivation is driven by a strong sense of duty and personal responsibility. He arrives in Metropolis intending to arrest Dr. Laughton, but the scientist dies in a fire before he can be taken into custody. Despite the case being unresolved, Ban feels a profound obligation to the people who hired him to provide an explanation, and he continues his investigation to uncover the truth behind Laughton’s work and death. This sense of duty is paralleled by his deep personal concern for his young nephew, Kenichi, who becomes separated from him during the chaos of the fire. A significant part of Ban’s role in the story involves navigating the city’s dangerous, multi-leveled districts to not only solve his case but also to find and protect Kenichi.

His central role in the plot is that of an outsider who becomes entangled in Metropolis's deep-seated social and political conflicts. To navigate the unfamiliar and vast city, the local police assign him a robotic assistant, a detective unit he nicknames Pero. This partnership is key to his investigation. More personally, Ban also forms an impromptu guardian relationship with Tima, the advanced android at the heart of Duke Red’s plans, after caring for her during the search for his nephew. His key relationships therefore revolve around his paternal care for Kenichi, his practical partnership with Pero, and his role as a protector for the lost and confused Tima.

Throughout the film, Ban's character is developed from a slightly bumbling but methodical investigator into a determined and active force against the city’s tyranny. He proves to have notable abilities that go beyond his detective skills. Despite his age and stature, he is highly experienced in several forms of combat, including judo, boxing, karate, wrestling, and aikido, which allows him to handle physically dangerous situations when necessary. He is also shown to have an old-fashioned habit of tasting food without paying and an admitted fondness for old sayings, which adds to his charmingly anachronistic personality.
