TV-Series
Description
Genjô Sanzô, as he appears in the Made In Europe dub of the anime Saiyuki, is a central figure whose portrayal aligns closely with the character's core conception across the series while being delivered through this specific French language version produced for television. He is a young man of 23 years, standing 177 centimeters tall, with striking golden blond hair and distinct, downward-slanted purple eyes that are frequently noted for their good looks. He carries the formal title of the 31st of China, marking him as one of the five highest-ranking priests in the land of Togenkyo, a position that commands immense spiritual authority.

Despite his exalted religious status, Sanzô is a profoundly unconventional priest who openly flouts Buddhist precepts. He is a chain-smoker, a heavy drinker, and an inveterate gambler, leading to his reputation as a corrupt or worldly monk. His personality is marked by a potent combination of arrogance, egotism, and a fearsome short temper, making him quick to anger and prone to violent outbursts. His characteristic responses to annoyance or threat are the blunt commands "Die" or "I'll kill you". He maintains a cynical and aloof demeanor, preferring to read the newspaper and drink tea or beer during quiet moments, and he has little patience for the mundane squabbles of his companions. Sanzô is a rational thinker who projects an aura of cold indifference, often claiming to be unconcerned with anything that is not his immediate responsibility.

However, this gruff exterior conceals a more complex interior world. Sanzô possesses a sharp, unwavering intensity and remarkable charisma that naturally draws others to him and allows him to act as a decisive leader. He is fiercely independent and subscribes to a personal philosophy of muichimotsu, or holding no attachments, a teaching from his master that he uses as a shield against emotional vulnerability. The death of his mentor, the previous Sanzô named Koumyou, on a rainy night when he was only 13 years old left a deep psychological scar. This trauma is the origin of his intense hatred for rain, which he endures by staying awake all night, brooding and smoking. Despite his constant denials, he demonstrates a deep, unspoken care for his traveling companions, whom he begrudgingly accepts as friends and would go to great lengths to protect.

Sanzôs primary motivation is the recovery of the Seiten Sutra, a sacred scripture that was stolen by a band of youkai on the night they murdered his adoptive father and teacher, Koumyou Sanzô. Following this tragedy, he inherited the opposing Maten Sutra, the priestly robes, and the mission to journey westward to investigate the source of the "Minus Wave," a phenomenon that drives youkai insane and threatens to resurrect the tyrannical demon lord Gyumao. This quest, assigned by the divine Kanzeon Bosatsu, forms the backbone of his role in the story as the leader of the Sanzô Party. His mission is not one of pious pilgrimage but a personal and violent crusade to reclaim what was stolen and avenge the only person he truly respected.

His most significant relationship is with Son Goku, a wild child he freed from a five-hundred-year imprisonment atop Mount Gogyo. Although Sanzô frequently hits Goku with a paper fan for his childish behavior and food-obsessed chatter, he functions as a gruff, reluctant father figure and caretaker, taking full responsibility for the boy's upbringing. He is the one who assembled his other two companions, the suave Sha Gojyo and the polite but haunted Cho Hakkai, offering them a chance to atone for their pasts and start new lives as his subordinates. The dynamic among the group is built on mutual dependence and camaraderie that none of them openly acknowledge, with Sanzô acting as the stoic anchor who keeps the volatile personalities in line, often by threatening or shooting at them.

In terms of development, Sanzô typically remains the unwavering core of the group, but the narrative reveals the immense burden he carries. His journey from a traumatized orphaned boy named Kouryuu, who was rescued from a river by Koumyou, to the hardened and cynical Genjô Sanzô is a process of forging an unbreakable will. He learns to live by his own brutal code, dedicating himself entirely to his purpose. While he uses the precept of muichimotsu to keep others at arm's length, his actions consistently betray a growing, if unspoken, attachment to his found family, forcing him to reconcile his philosophy with the reality of his feelings.

Sanzôs notable abilities are as unconventional as his personality. His primary weapon is a Smith & Wesson revolver, frequently referred to as a banishing gun, with which he is an expert marksman. He disdains hand-to-hand combat but is proficient enough to handle humans and lesser demons. In lieu of physical strikes, he often uses a large paper fan, or harisen, to discipline his arguing companions. His true power as a priest lies in the Maten Sutra he carries draped over his shoulders. When he recites its mantra, it unleashes a powerful spiritual force capable of repelling and exorcising evil. He also bears a red chakra on his forehead, a divine mark of his official status as a high-ranking Sanzô priest. Despite possessing immense spiritual power, he shows little devotion to Buddhism, holds divinities in contempt, and treats his sacred mission with a pragmatic, and often violent, efficiency.
