Movie
Description
In the film version of Escaflowne, Dilandau Albatou is a formidable antagonist whose identity is fundamentally different from his television counterpart. Rather than a brainwashed subject of the Zaibach Empire, this incarnation is introduced as a half-breed of the Dragon Clan, sharing the same psychic lineage as the protagonist Van Fanel and his brother Folken. His past is deliberately obscure; Folken explains that he discovered Dilandau living amongst feral dogs, a detail that informs his untamed and brutal nature.

As the commander of an elite unit known as the Dragon Slayers, Dilandau serves the Black Dragon Clan under Folken's command. He pilots a powerful and ancient guymelef called the Alseides, a piece of Dragon Armor that he is tasked with resurrecting and piloting. In battle, this machine is equipped with fearsome weaponry, including a devastating flamethrower.

Personality-wise, the film's Dilandau retains the volatile and sadistic core that defines the character. He is impulsive, capricious, and takes genuine, gleeful delight in destruction, particularly through fire. His sadism, however, often sabotages his own objectives, as he frequently ignores direct orders in favor of causing more chaos and killing more enemies. For instance, during a mission to retrieve the heroine Hitomi, he disregards Folken's instructions and chooses to launch a full-scale attack on a caravan simply for his own amusement. This defiance is not without consequence; Folken uses his psychic powers to physically punish Dilandau for his disobedience, yet spares his life, recognizing his value as a powerful asset due to his impure Dragon Clan blood.

His motivations are primal rather than political. He fights for the thrill of battle and holds a particular enmity toward Van Fanel. This rivalry is intensified when, during a psychic clash, Van destroys Dilandau's horse, escalating their personal conflict. Unlike the intricate personal history of the series, the movie provides no deeper psychological trauma. Instead, Dilandau appears as a pure force of chaotic violence, largely unbothered by his defeats. After his Alseides is destroyed by Van's guymelef, Escaflowne, Dilandau accepts the loss with surprising equanimity compared to his series counterpart. He survives the film's climax, and in the final scene, is seen riding off into the distance with his few remaining Dragon Slayers, presumably in search of their next battle.

His key relationships are also streamlined. He serves Folken, who acts as his handler but is not revealed to be his brother as in the series. He is accompanied by his loyal subordinate, Jajuka, and the rest of the Dragon Slayers, who follow him despite his harsh and abusive treatment of them. The character undergoes little development within the film; his primary role is to serve as a persistent obstacle and a dark mirror to Van, representing a path of pure, unrestrained violence. His notable abilities are expanded to include powerful psychic attacks that can physically tear apart the environment, a direct consequence of his Draconian heritage.
