Description
Folken Fanel, also known by his full name Folken Lacour de Fanel, serves as the primary antagonist in Escaflowne the Movie. He is the older brother of Van Fanel and the leader of the Black Dragon Clan, a militaristic force that drives much of the film's conflict.

In this cinematic retelling, Folken's background diverges significantly from the television series. He is a member of the Dragon Clan, a race of beings capable of manifesting wings. His past is marked by a terrible betrayal, as he led the massacre of his own people and took his father's head as a trophy, later displaying the clan's dragon skeleton in his throne room. Before this act, he lost his right arm during a dragon hunt, an event that led to it being replaced with a functional, though clearly artificial, mechanical prosthetic. The film portrays him as a death seeker, a character driven by a desire for oblivion.

The personality of the movie's Folken is one of cold, calculated darkness, a stark contrast to his more conflicted television counterpart. He is portrayed as a brilliant but deeply malevolent strategist. His motivations are rooted in a cynical ambition to end the world, believing that complete destruction is the only solution to the suffering inherent in life. Unlike his TV version, who ultimately sought a world without war through flawed means, this Folken displays no redeeming altruism and is described as a psychotic big bad whose actions are driven by self-loathing and a wish for annihilation.

His role in the story is to act as the puppet master opposing his brother, Van, and the film's protagonist, Hitomi. He commands the Black Dragon Clan and deploys agents such as the psychopathic warrior Dilandau to capture Hitomi and thwart Van. He creates most of the technological advancements that make his forces such a daunting threat to the other nations of Gaea. His key relationships are defined by tyranny. His connection to his brother Van is one of enmity, with no trace of the hidden affection or protective instincts found in the original series. Folken ruled the Dragon Clan through fear and power, with the loyalty of figures like the dragon cavalryman Jajuka being a tool rather than a genuine bond.

Folken does not experience a redemption arc in the movie; his development instead culminates in his final, desperate plan. He seeks to use the ancient armored warrior Escaflowne to fulfill a prophecy of destruction. In the film's climax, as he is on the verge of achieving his goal of ending the world, he is killed by Jajuka, a member of his own clan, who betrays and murders him. This death is a form of poetic irony, mirroring the betrayal he himself had committed against his people.

In terms of abilities, Folken possesses the wings of the Dragon Clan, though they have turned black, reflecting his corrupted nature. He protects himself with a barrier, is a highly skilled swordsman, and uses his mechanical arm to deliver a paralyzing agent through its needle-like nails. He is also the creator of much of the advanced technology used by his forces, establishing him as a formidable engineer and alchemist.
