Description
Kunio Murai is a student in class 3-4 at Holy Forest Academy. His background is shaped by an unusual family situation: his mother, Julia Murai, gave birth to him at the age of thirteen after being abandoned by her own parents and boyfriend, which left her to raise Kunio alone. Because of this, Kunio developed an intense overprotective streak toward his mother from a very young age, a trait that remains a dominant force in his life throughout the story.

In terms of personality, Kunio is hot-headed, impulsive, and quick to anger. He is not academically inclined and often acts before thinking, which sometimes leads to poor decisions. Despite a rough and frequently combative exterior, he possesses a deep sense of loyalty and a softer side that emerges most clearly in matters concerning his mother. He often behaves like a loud, physically aggressive delinquent, but his brashness masks genuine insecurity and a fear of losing the only family he has. Kunio can also be stubborn and prideful, making him unwilling to back down from a confrontation even when outmatched.

Kunio’s main motivation is to protect his mother from perceived threats, especially the attention of men who might try to get close to her. This drive is what initially puts him at odds with Eikichi Onizuka, the new teacher he fears will try to date Julia. More broadly, Kunio seeks stability and a sense of control, and his early hostility toward teachers stems from a deep distrust of adults and authority figures. As his relationship with Onizuka develops, his motivations expand to include loyalty to his friends and a growing respect for the teacher who proves himself in unorthodox ways.

Within the story, Kunio begins as one of the prominent student antagonists in class 3-4, the so-called “teacher killer” class. Alongside his close friends Kouji Fujiyoshi and Tadaaki Kusano, he leads a series of pranks intended to drive Onizuka away, including dangerous stunts like planting a cockroach in his lunch. These schemes consistently backfire in humiliating and painful ways for Kunio, such as him accidentally eating the insect. Early on, Onizuka also discovers Julia and openly flirts with her, which only fuels Kunio’s fury. A turning point occurs when the trio gets into serious trouble with a gang, and Onizuka responds by orchestrating a wild rescue that involves forcing Kunio to bungee jump off the Tokyo Bay Bridge. This extreme lesson, combined with Onizuka’s willingness to stand by them, causes Kunio to see the teacher in a new light. He becomes one of the first students from the class to accept Onizuka, though he never fully loses his wariness whenever his mother is involved. From then on, Kunio shifts from antagonist to one of Onizuka’s most frequent companions, often getting dragged into the teacher’s absurd schemes and providing a physical, if somewhat reckless, backup.

Key relationships include his mother, Julia, with whom he shares a deeply protective bond that borders on obsession; Onizuka, the mentor and rival figure who constantly tests his patience but earns his loyalty; and his two constant friends, Fujiyoshi and Kusano, who form his core group of troublemakers. Kunio also interacts with other classmates like Yoshito Kikuchi, and over time his influence within the room grows as he moves from instigating chaos to sometimes helping maintain a rough kind of order among his peers.

Kunio’s development is one of gradual maturation. He enters the series as a narrow-minded bully whose identity is defined almost entirely by antagonism toward teachers and fierce defense of his mother. Through Onizuka’s extreme, life-risking teaching methods, he learns to differentiate between adults who deserve mistrust and those who genuinely care. While he remains academically weak and prone to outbursts, he becomes less blindly hostile and more capable of acting as a supportive friend and occasional voice of reason within his group. His temper and mother complex never fully disappear, but they are channeled into less destructive outlets, and he ultimately accepts Onizuka’s place in his life, even if he still bristles at the teacher’s ongoing jokes about marrying Julia.

Notable abilities are limited in the traditional sense. Kunio possesses physical toughness and a willingness to fight, even against stronger opponents, but he lacks refined combat skills and often ends up outmatched without Onizuka’s help. He enjoys arcade games and is decent at them, though not a standout. His greatest asset is his unyielding determination and the fierce protective instinct that, when properly directed, allows him to stand up for others. Academically, he hovers near the bottom of the class, and his social clumsiness with girls is a recurring source of frustration for him. Nevertheless, his straightforward, if bullheaded, nature makes him a memorable and eventually endearing presence within the classroom dynamic.
