Description
Nao Kadena is a character who appears in the Great Teacher Onizuka anime, originating from the prequel series Shonan Junai Gumi, where she replaces the manga character Naoko Moritaka as the school nurse. She stands at least 178 centimeters tall, slightly taller than Eikichi Onizuka, with long straight light dark hair, brown eyes, and an athletic curvaceous figure. She is typically seen wearing red earrings and bright red lipstick, and she has a tattoo of the Pieta on her back that leads some students to suspect she has yakuza connections.
Her background is rooted in street racing, where she was known as the Queen of Hakosuka. She won illegal races until her younger brother suffered a near-fatal accident while racing, leaving him with foreign objects lodged in his body and in need of an expensive surgery costing three million yen. She gave up racing and took the position of school nurse at Seirin Academy to earn the money for his operation. After saving enough, she entrusted the money to an American doctor who tricked her and fled, which led her to consider leaving the nursing job. She changed her mind after challenging Onizuka to a race, which reminded her that racing could still be fun if not reckless, and after her brother decided to earn the money himself. She also convinced Vice Principal Hiroshi Uchiyamada to allow her to remain as the school nurse.
Nao Kadena is a mature and confident woman who is well aware of the effect she has on men. She uses her physical attractiveness as a practical tool to motivate her male students, offering provocative incentives for academic achievement. For example, she offered sex to any boy who could score perfectly on a kanji test, and when the highest scorer only reached 75, she gave him what she called a boob sandwich. For the female students who grew jealous and hostile toward her, she arranged tutoring sessions with attractive former students who had gone on to prestigious universities, motivating the girls to study hard in order to get into universities with desirable male populations. She also attempted to set up the student Shinomi with Onizuka through an elaborate scheme involving a bikini, a cell phone, a television, and a box, though the box was accidentally shipped to someone with a similar name.
She gets along well with Azusa Fuyutsuki, whom she tries to help mature as a woman by giving advice on personal and romantic matters. She also forms a bond with Onizuka, who helps lift her out of her despair by racing her and showing her that her past passion does not have to be a source of guilt. Her relationship with her brother, Takashi Kadena, is a central motivation for her actions, as she blames herself for his condition because he crashed while racing her. Later, she is seen alongside other faculty members, including Director Ryoko Sakurai, opposing a group from the Ministry of Education involved in a conspiracy.
Notable abilities include her exceptional driving skills from her street racing days, her strategic use of her appearance and psychology to influence students, and her practical resourcefulness, which includes selling items at a discount to students and teachers to raise money. Her character development moves from a single-minded focus on earning money for her brother's surgery toward a more integrated role within the school community, where she applies her unconventional methods to encourage academic effort and begins to find personal fulfillment in her work as an educator.
