Description
Kanae Ohtori is a supporting character in Revolutionary Girl Utena. She is a beautiful and elegant third-year high school student at Ohtori Academy, distinguished by her wavy, light yellow-green hair and green eyes. As the only daughter of the Ohtori Academy board chairman, she has been raised in a life of wealth and privilege, carrying the expectations and pressures that accompany her elite family name. Kanae is engaged to Akio Ohtori, the academy's acting chairman, with plans to marry him after her graduation.
On the surface, Kanae presents a kind, gentle, and polite demeanor, always meeting others with a smile. She appears to be the picture of a classic, sheltered princess, compliant with the path laid out for her by her family. However, beneath this graceful exterior, she harbors deep and complex emotional turmoil. Her primary internal conflict stems from her relationship with Anthy Himemiya, her future sister-in-law. Despite Kanae's sincere efforts to befriend Anthy and her overtures of sisterly affection, Anthy remains perpetually distant, detached, and mysteriously unresponsive. This rejection deeply distresses Kanae, who is unaccustomed to such failure and becomes consumed by a growing sense of fear, disgust, and even hatred toward Anthy. She is perceptive enough to sense that something is deeply unsettling and alien about Anthy, yet she lacks the tools to address this discomfort, leading to feelings of powerlessness and alienation.
Kanae's motivations are largely driven by a desire to maintain the harmonious, controlled world she has always known and to secure her future with Akio. Her inability to connect with Anthy represents a fundamental threat to this vision, making her feel like a failure in her prescribed role. This vulnerability is exploited by Souji Mikage, who manipulates her wounded feelings and recruits her as the first Black Rose Duelist during the series Black Rose arc. Her designated duel is symbolically named Alienation, reflecting the isolation she feels within her own engagement and family. During her duel against Utena Tenjou, a vase of lilies is placed on her desk, and she wields a rapier as her weapon. Although she fights Utena, Kanae is ultimately defeated, and her memory of the events is erased, as is the case for all Black Rose duelists.
Kanae's primary relationship is with her fiancé, Akio Ohtori. While she genuinely loves him and believes in their future together, it becomes increasingly clear that Akio is merely using her for her family influence to gain control over Ohtori Academy. Her relationship with him deteriorates as the series progresses, and she is completely unaware that he is having an affair with her own mother, a betrayal that further underlines her role as a pawn in the schemes of those around her. Her relationship with Anthy is defined by this unreciprocated affection and growing animosity, which isolates her further.
Over the course of the story, Kanae's development is a tragic arc of disempowerment. From a seemingly confident young woman, she becomes increasingly sidelined and stripped of her agency. Her final appearance in the anime is in a catatonic state, being fed apple slices by Akio and Anthy in a scene that strongly implies she has been completely broken, poisoned, or otherwise disposed of now that she is no longer useful to Akio's plans. She effectively disappears from the narrative, a discarded pawn in the larger, more sinister games being played at Ohtori Academy.
