Description
Mike, also known as Tory and more commonly as Akio Ohtori, is a central figure in the story. He serves as the acting chairman of Ohtori Academy, a position he obtained after engineering the illness of the true director. He is the older brother of Anthy Himemiya. In his past, he was a noble prince known as Dios, who once saved a young Utena Tenjou and gave her a rose-engraved ring, inspiring her desire to become a prince. However, he lost his nobility and became corrupted, forsaking his role as a prince. His given name, Akio, is derived from the Japanese name for Venus, the Morning Star, which is associated with Lucifer, and this fallen-angel motif underpins his character.

Akio is the true mastermind behind the duel tournament at Ohtori Academy. He orchestrates the events from the shadows, using the student council, duelists, and even his sister as pawns in a scheme to regain the power of eternity that he lost. He is charming, well-read, and well-dressed, with interests in photography, classic literature, and astrology, particularly the star Venus. He often drives a distinctive car, which becomes a symbol of his seductive and controlling influence over others.

Personality-wise, Akio is manipulative, cold-blooded, and uses people without remorse. He presents a kind and respectful exterior but is ultimately self-serving. He is a playboy who seduces many characters, including his sister Anthy, Utena, Kanae Ohtori (his fiancée), Kozue Kaoru, and even Touga Kiryuu, among others. His relationship with Anthy is central and deeply dysfunctional: they share an incestuous bond, and while he appears to dominate her, he is also dependent on her power as the Rose Bride. He shows genuine emotional complexity—he grieves his lost nobility and feels Anthy's pain—but his selfishness and nature drive him to continue his manipulations.

Akio's role in the story becomes prominent in the later arcs, where he reveals himself as the prince from Utena's past. He grooms Utena, attempting to seduce her and turn her into a submissive princess, using her idealism against her. He plans to use her and Anthy to open the Rose Gate and obtain the power of eternity. In the climax, Utena defies him, and despite stabbing her through the back with Anthy's help, Akio fails to open the gate. He ultimately loses his hold on Anthy, who chooses to leave the academy in search of Utena. Akio is left behind, intending to start a new attempt.

Notable abilities include his skill in manipulation and psychological control, his knowledge of the dueling system, and his possession of the Sword of Dios. However, his power is ultimately reliant on Anthy and the dueling framework he created. His development is largely a descent into corruption and a failed attempt to reclaim a lost ideal, ending in isolation.
