Description
Dio Eraclea is a major character from the anime series Last Exile, primarily distinguished as the younger brother of Maestro Delphine Eraclea, the absolute ruler of the mysterious Guild. As a member of the ruling Eraclea family, one of the Guild’s four noble houses, he holds the title of Guild Principal and is the heir and successor to the House of Eraclea. At the beginning of the story, he is sixteen years old.
Personality-wise, Dio is famously playful, cheerful, and eccentric, often treating serious situations as if they were games. He has a childlike innocence and strong sociability, but this carefree exterior masks a deep-seated fear and trauma caused by his tyrannical sister. He despises being束缚 by the rigid duties of the Guild and possesses a rebellious spirit, seeking to escape his prescribed fate to find his own fun and freedom. His odd nature is frequently expressed through his fascination with the protagonist, Claus Valca, whom he nicknames "Immelman" after the aerial maneuver Claus favors.
Dio’s primary motivation shifts from a self-centered pursuit of amusement to a desperate struggle for personal autonomy. Initially, he is driven by curiosity and a desire to compete with Claus, whose piloting skills he admires. However, as the series progresses, his actions are increasingly motivated by a need to escape his sister Delphine’s control, as she systematically destroys his personality to mold him into a suitable Guild heir. After his traumatic experiences, his goal transforms into one of simply surviving and maintaining his sense of self, ultimately finding solace in the freedom of flying.
Dio’s role in the story is that of a rival, a prisoner, and eventually an ally. He first appears as an antagonist, piloting a Guild starfish fighter, but becomes infatuated with Claus after losing to him in the Horizon Cave race. He and his attendant, Lucciola, essentially become stowaways on the Silvana, where he is initially treated as a prisoner before being accepted as a friend and honorary crew member. In the sequel, Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing, he has survived his apparent death and become a valued member of the Sky Pirates, continuing to aid the protagonists with his unparalleled flying skills.
Key relationships define Dio’s character arc. His relationship with his sister, Delphine, is the most crucial and toxic, characterized by oppression and terror on his part and cruel manipulation on hers. In stark contrast, his bond with Lucciola, his navigator and loyal friend, is one of deep affection and dependence; Lucciola serves as his protector and emotional anchor. After Lucciola’s death, Dio keeps the navigator’s seat in his vanship empty as a tribute, refusing to let anyone else sit there. His rivalry and eventual friendship with Claus Valca are also central, as Claus represents the freedom and skill Dio admires and he ultimately makes a promise to Claus to protect the young girl Alvis.
Dio undergoes significant development, beginning as a volatile and less immature youth who acts for his own pleasure. He suffers a catastrophic mental breakdown in the first series when Delphine forces him to undergo a brainwashing procedure, reducing him to a babbling, insane state as preparation for the Guild’s violent coming-of-age ceremony, the Rite of the Covenant. He survives this ordeal and emerges victorious, killing his rivals to secure his position. By the time of the sequel, two years later, he has achieved substantial mental recovery. He is calmer, more composed, and has found a new family among the Sky Pirates, finally living freely without the mark of the Guild on his forehead. He has grown enough to comfort others, showing a maturity that contrasts sharply with his earlier self.
Notable abilities include his exceptional talent as a pilot. He is a master of both Guild starfish fighters and standard vanships, often flying solo without a navigator. His piloting skills are portrayed as being on par with, or even superior to, Claus Valca’s. He is also a capable combatant, demonstrating significant skill in hand-to-hand fighting.
