Description
Duke David Mad-thane is a high-ranking noble and military commander in the nation of Anatoray, holding the title of duke and serving as the captain of the flagship Claimh Solais, which leads the Mad-thane Fleet. He is entrusted with the defense of the regions of Minagith and Norkia against the invading forces of Disith. His background establishes him as an experienced officer of the established aristocracy, yet his actions set him apart from many of his peers.

In terms of personality, Mad-thane is portrayed as an optimistic and peace-seeking individual. He holds a genuine hope for an end to the long-standing conflict, a sentiment that becomes evident after he meets the Disith commander Nestor Messina, remarking that there is hope yet for the world's survival. This hopeful and conciliatory attitude, however, causes him to be frequently ridiculed by other commanding officers, who interpret his desire for peace and his caution in battle as cowardice.

His motivations are rooted in a desire to protect his people and to see an end to the war. The turning point in his role comes during the battle at Minagith, when the young vanship pilots Claus Valca and Lavie Head cover the retreat of his fleet using only their small vessel. This act inspires Mad-thane to recognize the tactical potential of vanships in aerial combat. Consequently, he sponsors the formation of dedicated vanship squadrons, which later serve as fighter support in the assault against the Guild. This decision marks a shift from traditional fleet tactics to more innovative, small-craft warfare.

Within the story, Mad-thane functions as a supporting character who influences the direction of the conflict by legitimizing and enabling the use of vanships in a military capacity. He is a respected but somewhat isolated figure among the Anatoray nobility, whose conservatism clashes with his forward-thinking approach. His key relationships include his wife, Lady Mad-thane, who manages the household in his absence and assigns delivery missions to couriers, and his young daughter Holly Mad-thane, who fears for his safety during the battle at Minagith and sends him a message of hope.

His development is subtle but meaningful: he evolves from a conventional fleet commander into a proponent of unconventional air support, driven by the courage he witnesses in commoner pilots. This growth challenges the rigid class and tactical hierarchies of Anatoray. While he does not possess supernatural abilities, his notable abilities lie in his strategic command, his willingness to adapt, and his ability to inspire loyalty through his earnest, if sometimes misunderstood, optimism. The defense of Minagith ultimately fails due to a surprise attack by Disith that disregards battle regulations, but Mad-thane’s subsequent actions help shape the alliance’s later victories.
