Description
Enrico Maxwell is the fanatical leader of the Vatican's Special Section XIII, the Iscariot Organization. He rose to the rank of archbishop after a difficult childhood, having been abandoned by his parents and raised in an orphanage run by the paladin Alexander Anderson. Although Anderson did well to raise him, Maxwell grew up spiteful and embittered, and he resolved to become someone who would not be looked down upon. This drive for respect and power shaped his entire adult life.
As head of Iscariot, Maxwell rules with an iron fist and instills his subordinates with the same religious fervor he possesses. He harbors an absolute faith in the supremacy of the Catholic Church and dreams of turning the entire world back to that faith. His personality is characterized by deep-seated arrogance and a veiled insolence toward those he considers beneath him, including the Protestant Hellsing Organization. He has a noticeable physical tic in his right eye that causes it to wince involuntarily, and he is known to drool while asleep.
Maxwell is a major antagonist and the primary rival of Sir Integra Hellsing and her organization. He is openly offended that Integra employs vampires, the very enemies of Iscariot, as agents. Despite this animosity, he is fascinated by Integra and makes his interest known to her. His relationship with his mentor, Alexander Anderson, is strained because Anderson questions Maxwell's motivations and methods. Maxwell commands the Iscariot forces, including agents such as Heinkel Wolfe and Yumie, and often breaks border jurisdiction treaties to pursue his own agenda against Hellsing.
During Millennium's invasion of London, Maxwell sees an opportunity to eliminate both the Protestant Hellsing organization and the Catholic Church's enemies in one stroke. He launches his own offensive, intending to wipe out Hellsing, Millennium, and any Londoners caught in the crossfire. However, his overreaching ambition and arrogance lead to his downfall, as Alucard confronts him and puts an end to his plan.
Maxwell himself possesses no supernatural combat abilities; his power lies in his position as archbishop and the authority he wields over Iscariot's military and religious resources. He is a strategic and political figure rather than a direct combatant. His most notable traits are his fanatical devotion, his personal ambition, and his willingness to sacrifice anyone, including his own allies, to achieve his vision of a world united under Catholic rule.
