Description
Makoto Isshiki is a character from the anime RahXephon. He is a Mulian who works for TERRA, the Earth-based organization opposing the Mu. Isshiki is a clone created from the DNA of Ernst von Bähbem, the chief antagonist, and is referred to as the White Snake because of his albinism and his cold, manipulative personality. His background is marked by a deep inferiority complex rooted in his childhood at the Bähbem Institute, where he was classified as a D-ranked clone, the lowest designation. Despite possessing abilities that exceeded what was expected of a D type, he internalized that ranking and developed an obsessive need to prove his worth. This drives him to be haughty, arrogant, and contemptuous toward others, particularly Ayato Kamina, the protagonist and pilot of the RahXephon.
As a child, Isshiki was raised alongside two other potential instrumentalists, Itsuki Kisaragi and Helena. During that time, he discovered a failed Dolem, a living rock, beneath the mansion and kept it as a pet, believing it made him special. When the rock began to disintegrate outside the institute’s environment, he and Itsuki attempted to escape on it, but the rock crumbled. In the aftermath, he had a vision of multiple clone versions of himself, learning he was version 3.20, a mass-produced being. This incident crystallized his existential crisis: he wants to be seen as an individual, not a disposable product.
Isshiki’s role in the story is that of an antagonist and a political schemer. He is sent by the Earth Federation to observe TERRA, but he uses his knowledge of the Mu and the RahXephon project to maneuver into positions of power. He seduces and betrays the character Nanamori to gain evidence of Quon’s awakening, and he manipulates events to undermine others. After Commander Kunugi is dismissed, Isshiki takes over and initiates Operation Downfall, a plan to destroy the Tokyo Jupiter barrier around Tokyo. The operation succeeds, but it has the unforeseen consequence of allowing more Mu cities to appear, leading to total failure. His actions are partly influenced by the mysterious Reika Mishima, who acts as his aide but is later revealed to be Ixtli, the soul of the RahXephon, subtly controlling events.
Isshiki’s key relationship is with Itsuki Kisaragi, whom he considers his only true friend from childhood. Despite his manipulative nature, he shares a bond with Itsuki rooted in their shared history at the institute. His relationship with Ayato is one of disdain and rivalry, as he resents Ayato’s natural talent and special status as an instrumentalist. Isshiki’s development is a tragic arc: his relentless pursuit of validation leads him to ultimate failure and mental collapse. After being imprisoned for the disastrous outcome of Operation Downfall, he escapes and goes on a killing spree of D-clone units, targeting the very class he despised. He eventually confronts Ernst von Bähbem but is shot and killed.
Notable abilities include his skill in controlling a manmade Dolem during his childhood, suggesting a latent connection to the Mu’s technology, and his sharp intellect for political and military strategy. He does not pilot a mecha himself, but his influence and knowledge make him a significant figure in the conflict. Isshiki is a character defined by his internal struggle against his own origins and his desperate, ultimately self-destructive attempt to be seen as exceptional.
