Description
Masayoshi Kuki is a high-ranking officer serving as second in command to Maya Kamina within the confines of Tokyo Jupiter. His background is deeply tied to the Great Mu War, as he was originally an officer of the Japan Self-Defense Forces who went undercover. In that capacity, he gave the order to Jin Kunugi to carry out the nuclear strike against the Mu, an action that was part of a calculated scheme to provoke the conflict and engineer a false war, making the Mu appear as the aggressor. This operation branded Kuki, along with Maya and his comrade Shinobu Miwa, as traitors to humanity. Following the conflict, he returned to Mu territory and resumed his role within their hierarchy.
Kuki's personality is characterized by a reserved and stoic demeanor. He is a man of duty and principle, yet he does not follow orders blindly. He shows a willingness to question Maya's commands and expresses disapproval of the way she treats Ayato Kamina, suggesting a moral awareness and a sense of justice that sets him apart from pure obedience. His motivations are rooted in his loyalty to the Mu cause, but his past actions reveal a capacity for manipulation and a willingness to act in the gray areas of morality for the sake of a larger agenda.
In the story, Kuki functions as a key antagonist within the Mu faction. He and Miwa are responsible for deploying the Dolems, the clay-based mecha used against the human forces. Later in the series, Kuki takes direct control of a Dolem himself, piloting the Dolem Largo in an attack on Nirai Kanai. During this assault, his Dolem proves nearly invincible against the base's defense systems, showcasing his considerable ability as a pilot and his threat level. His relationship with Jin Kunugi is a significant thread; Kuki's past manipulation of Kunugi creates a personal vendetta that ultimately leads to his downfall. Kuki is killed by Kunugi in a suicidal attack.
Throughout the series, Kuki's development is subtle but present. He begins as a seemingly loyal subordinate, but his independent questioning of Maya's decisions hints at an internal conflict. His role as a pawn in the larger war transforms into that of a direct combatant, and his history as an instigator of the war adds a layer of tragic irony to his fate. His notable abilities include his skill as a Dolem pilot, his authoritative command within the Mu military structure, and his proficiency in covert operations and strategic deception, as demonstrated by his past undercover work.
