TV-Series
Description
Kim Hotal is a young woman who serves as an operative in the Tactical Division of TERRA, an organization formed to counter the mysterious Mu. Born in the year 2009, she is eighteen years old at the start of the series. Her appearance is marked by gray eyes and black hair cut to ear-length.
Her life was irrevocably shaped by tragedy when she was a child. Her parents were killed during an initial attack on Australia by a Dolem named Ritardando, an event that claimed six million lives. This traumatic loss is the central motivating force in her life, leading her to join TERRA primarily as a means of seeking revenge against the Mulians and the Dolems that took her family. The psychological impact of this childhood trauma manifests as two opposing but coexisting sides of her personality: one is the determined girl who marches forward, and the other is the crying child she still carries inside.
Kim is characterized by a fierce and often aggressive exterior, which stems directly from her unresolved pain. This is most evident in her early interactions with the protagonist, Ayato Kamina. She becomes hostile and verbally aggressive towards him, blaming him for the return of the Dolem Ritardando and accusing him of being useless when he hesitates to fight. Her anger is less about him personally and more a projection of her traumatic memories and her desperate need for the Dolem to be destroyed. Beneath this tough facade, however, she is deeply caring. This is shown in her friendship with Megumi Shitou, toward whom she feels tremendous guilt for secretly dating Souichi Yagumo, knowing that Megumi also has feelings for him. When the secret comes to light, Kim breaks down in tears, repeatedly apologizing for hiding the truth from her best friend.
Within the story, Kim serves as a key member of the TERRA bridge crew, working alongside her colleagues to track and analyze Dolem movements. Her personal quest for vengeance directly drives the plot of an early episode when she uses a clue from the enigmatic Quon to decipher the pattern of the Dolem's attacks, allowing TERRA to predict its next target. Her development throughout the series is marked by her struggle with her trauma. While she initially seeks revenge, a conversation with Ayato before the final battle reveals a shift. When she asks him if he is fighting for revenge like her, he responds that he fights simply because he has the ability to do so. This moment suggests a path where trauma, while defining, does not have to be completely crippling. However, the narrative continues to test her resilience. Late in the series, she witnesses Souichi Yagumo being obliterated by Ayato, an event that deepens her trauma. In a moment of complete desperation and despair, she is seen futilely shooting at a projection of Ayato before collapsing. Despite this immense suffering, there are hints of a future for her, as it is strongly implied she becomes pregnant by Yagumo, experiencing morning sickness in scenes near the end of the series.
Key relationships define her personal journey. Her closest friendship is with Megumi Shitou, a bond that is strained by her secret romance with Yagumo but ultimately endures. Her relationship with Souichi Yagumo is a romantic one that they keep hidden from their colleagues, and it results in her pregnancy. As a TERRA operative, she reports to superiors like Jin Kunugi. Kim does not possess any supernatural or piloting abilities; her notable skills lie in her work as a tactical analyst and her profound emotional drive, which makes her one of the most grounded and empathetic characters in the narrative.
