Description
Bonta-kun originates as the mascot character of a local amusement park called Fumo Fumo Land, appearing as a yellow, round-bodied costume with a head resembling either a mouse or a dog. This friendly figure wears a distinctive hat and a red bow tie, designed to entertain children and distribute balloons in a peaceful, jovial manner. The character’s signature vocalization is the nonsense sound "fumoffu," which later becomes a defining technical trait.

The persona of Bonta-kun undergoes a radical transformation when the protagonist, Sousuke Sagara, dons one of the costumes. Initially, Sousuke wears the suit out of necessity to conceal his identity while protecting Kaname Chidori from local thugs, finding the discarded costume nearby. Motivated by a genuine fondness for the character’s appearance—a remnant from a childhood memory of carrying a Bonta-kun doll after a plane crash—Sousuke decides to repurpose the outfit. He develops it into a functional piece of tactical gear, treating the mascot as a prototype for a new type of armed exoskeleton.

In its modified form, Bonta-kun functions as a powered suit or a miniature, humanoid Arm Slave. The suit is equipped with a variety of internal systems, including night vision sensors in the eyes and high-sensitivity microphones in the ears for enhanced surveillance. It offers significant defensive capabilities, with an outer layer capable of blocking 7.62mm rifle bullets. The suit integrates a muscle strength assistance system, allowing the wearer to move without feeling the equipment’s weight. Bonta-kun is also armed with an extensive arsenal of conventional weapons, such as handguns, shotguns, assault rifles, and grenade launchers.

Despite these advanced features, the suit has a notorious and persistent flaw: a malfunctioning voice changer. Due to a deliberate tampering by the character Teletha Testarossa, who wished to see Sousuke make cute sounds, the system crashes instantly if the pilot attempts to disable the voice modulation. Consequently, any words spoken by the person inside are automatically converted into variations of the "fumo" sound, such as "fumoffu" or "fumofumo." This communication barrier becomes a recurring source of humor, often requiring Kaname Chidori to translate via radio.

Sousuke’s role as the pilot transforms Bonta-kun from a simple amusement park figure into a secret protector for Kaname. Operating under the guise of the mascot, Sousuke effectively neutralizes threats ranging from street gangs to armed criminals, all while maintaining his anonymity. The character’s motivation stems from a tactical need for a disguise that is unrecognizable as a human combatant, but it is also driven by a personal, nostalgic attachment to the doll’s design.

The initial prototype leads to the development of a mass-produced version of the Bonta-kun suit, created in collaboration with an arms manufacturer. While intended for military and police use, the mass-produced units inherit the same voice changer glitch, making them commercially unappealing to most buyers. The only recorded purchasers are specialized law enforcement agencies like the Miami Police SWAT team. The remaining stock is later acquired and used effectively by a local yakuza group, who achieve remarkable success in combat while wearing the suits.

Key relationships define Bonta-kun’s function in the narrative. The connection between Sousuke and Kaname is central, as the suit allows him to watch over her from a distance or intervene without revealing his identity. There is also a significant, albeit indirect, link to Teletha Testarossa, whose prank is the root cause of the suit’s speech impediment. Furthermore, the character carries a symbolic weight tied to Sousuke’s past, representing a fragment of innocence from his childhood before he was trained as a soldier.

In terms of development, Bonta-kun evolves from a simple costume into a heavily modified combat suit known as the Mk-2, and later into a full production model. These later versions include advanced features like infrared and heartbeat sensors, as well as improved ballistic protection. However, the core personality and abilities remain consistent: a deceptively cute and cuddly exterior that belies a highly efficient, heavily armed fighting machine. Its notable ability lies in this very contrast, as the non-threatening silhouette often confuses enemy sensors and human opponents, providing a tactical advantage that a standard soldier would not have.
