Description
Mutsumi Otohime is a gentle, kind, and soft-spoken young woman who appears in the anime series Love Hina and its OVA continuation Love Hina Again. She is originally from a small island near Okinawa, where she lives with her parents and seven younger siblings. In Love Hina Again, she continues to be a close friend of Keitaro Urashima and Naru Narusegawa, having moved closer to the Hinata Inn to study for the Tokyo University entrance exams alongside them.
Mutsumi is defined by a striking combination of extreme optimism, naivety, and a scatterbrained demeanor that often leads to comically clumsy situations. She is prone to catatonic fainting spells caused by anemia, which can make her appear unconscious or even deceased for several minutes. Despite her frail constitution, she possesses an unusually strong grip and a remarkable resilience, often recovering quickly from her episodes. Her absent-mindedness extends to forgetting to write her name on exam papers or fainting during tests, which has caused her to fail the Tokyo University entrance exam multiple times—a pattern that mirrors Keitaro’s own struggles. Indeed, she is frequently described as a female version of Keitaro due to their shared clumsiness, good-natured temperament, and similar habits.
Underneath her airheaded exterior, Mutsumi is extremely intelligent, scoring full marks on practice exams, and she is surprisingly intuitive and perceptive, noticing details that others miss. She has a unique ability to communicate with turtles, a skill she uses with her pet turtle Tama-chan, whom she gives to Keitaro and Naru as a gift. She also has a strong fondness for watermelons and dried squid, and a tendency to kiss friends and acquaintances on the lips as a friendly greeting.
Her motivations are deeply rooted in a childhood promise. As a young girl staying at the Hinata Inn while her mother worked there, Mutsumi befriended Keitaro and a sickly Naru. She was the first to hear the legend that two people who love each other will find happiness if they enter Tokyo University together. Knowing that the shy Naru liked Keitaro, Mutsumi encouraged her to make that promise with Keitaro. Mutsumi herself then made the same promise with Naru, aiming to attend Tokyo University together. Over time, the three forgot the details of their shared past, but the promise drives Mutsumi to keep trying. When she later remembers the truth, she selflessly chooses to support the developing romantic relationship between Keitaro and Naru rather than pursue her own feelings, even deliberately losing a game of rock-paper-scissors to let Naru win the chance to be with Keitaro.
In Love Hina Again, Mutsumi’s role is that of a supportive friend who helps resolve lingering conflicts among the Hinata residents. When Keitaro’s adopted sister Kanako takes over the inn and tests the girls’ hostess skills, Mutsumi disguises herself as Keitaro to assist in the training; the resemblance is so uncanny that even Naru is momentarily fooled. Throughout the OVA, Mutsumi continues to study and eventually succeeds in entering Tokyo University, later becoming a graduate student. Her development sees her gradually overcoming the worst of her anemia and gaining more confidence in her own abilities. Notable abilities include her turtle communication, her fainting spells, and her capacity to maintain an infectiously cheerful and sisterly attitude even in difficult circumstances, always prioritizing the happiness of those she cares about.
