TV-Series
Description
Juna Ariyoshi is the central protagonist of the anime Earth Girl Arjuna. She is a tenth-grade student living in the city of Kobe, Japan, and at the start of the story, she is presented as a fairly ordinary and typical teenager. Her life changes radically after a fatal motorcycle accident, during which her spirit leaves her body. In this state, she is approached by a mysterious boy named Chris, who offers to restore her life in exchange for becoming the Avatar of Time and protecting the dying planet. Upon agreeing, she is resurrected and granted extraordinary powers, symbolized by a magatama bead that appears on her forehead.

In terms of personality, Juna is portrayed as a young girl who is struggling to adapt to the sudden and immense responsibilities thrust upon her. She possesses a strong, inherent connection to nature and a childlike curiosity about the world, but she is also confused, frustrated, and unsure of her purpose. While she is eager to help, she initially interprets her mission in simplistic terms, believing she must fight and destroy the monstrous Raaja, which she sees as the cause of the Earth's suffering. This leads to frequent misunderstandings, particularly with her mentor, Chris, whose cryptic questions like why do you kill? she cannot immediately comprehend. Her frustration is compounded by the fact that her new sensitivities make it difficult for her to participate in the normal activities of a modern teenager, leading to a sense of isolation.

Juna's primary motivation throughout the series is to protect the Earth and the people she loves, particularly her boyfriend, Tokio. However, her understanding of what protection means evolves. Initially driven by a desire to fight visible monsters, her journey is defined by a deeper search to understand what she is truly fighting for and why the Earth is in danger. Her role in the story is that of a reluctant but determined hero who must learn that her task is not to destroy the Raaja, but to understand that they are a manifestation of the Earth's pain, and to find a way to become one with the target to restore balance.

Her key relationships are central to her development. The most prominent is with her boyfriend, Tokio Oshima, a normal teenage boy who is addicted to fast food and video games and cannot fully grasp the changes Juna is going through. Their relationship is strained by miscommunication and his inability to comprehend her new reality, which creates significant emotional stress for her. Her relationship with Chris is that of a student to a patient but enigmatic teacher. She relies on his guidance but often finds his lessons frustratingly abstract. She also has a complex dynamic with Cindy Klein, Chris's young telepathic translator, who is initially cold and resentful towards Juna, feeling she can never replace Chris. Within her family, Juna deals with a constantly worried mother and a strained relationship with her rebellious older sister, Kaine, whose unplanned pregnancy becomes a significant emotional trial for Juna.

Throughout the series, Juna undergoes significant character development. She moves from a state of confusion and reliance on violence to a true awakening of her powers and purpose. She struggles with the knowledge she gains about the world, applying it to challenge the environmentally destructive habits of modern life, much to the chagrin of those around her. Her arc culminates in the final episode, where she abandons fighting altogether. She finally realizes that the Raaja are not separate enemies but are the Earth itself trying to cleanse a wound. By ceasing to fight and instead merging with them, she fully awakens as the Avatar of Time and saves the world, achieving the understanding of becoming one with the target that had eluded her since the beginning.

As the Avatar of Time, Juna possesses several notable abilities. Her powers are tied to her earth sympathy, granting her sensitivity to environmental imbalances and the pain of the planet. She can perceive the normally invisible Raaja and fight them using what appears to be archery, manifesting a bow named Gandiva and energy arrows. Her powers also allow her to see the thoughts of others as visible words and to project her spirit to other locations. When fully awakened, her ultimate ability is not destruction but the pacification of the Raaja through merging with them, demonstrating that her greatest power lies in empathy and understanding rather than combat.
