Description
Chris Hawken is a central figure who first appears as a young boy in a wheelchair, yet his true nature is that of a powerful, non-corporeal entity choosing to inhabit a physical form. His physical body is frail and disabled, a consequence of expending a great deal of his energy to resurrect the protagonist, Juna Ariyoshi, following her fatal motorcycle accident. He communicates exclusively through telepathy, often relying on his young assistant, Cindy Klein, to convey his thoughts to others.

As a mentor figure, Chris initially presents himself as a guide and savior. He offers Juna a second chance at life in exchange for her becoming the Avatar of Time, a warrior tasked with protecting the Earth from monstrous, pollution-born entities known as the Raaja. He is affiliated with SEED, an international organization dedicated to combating this environmental threat. In this early role, he is unfailingly kind and patient, repeatedly urging Juna to seek peace and understanding rather than simply fighting and killing the Raaja, often questioning her violent actions with the refrain, "Why do you kill?".

This seemingly benevolent exterior, however, masks a far more complex and fatalistic motivation. Chris’s ultimate objective is revealed to be a drastic form of environmental purification: the annihilation of humanity. He is the hidden creator of the Raaja, having engineered them as a means to cleanse the Earth of the human race, whom he views as an irredeemable plague upon the planet. His actions escalate to a terrifying extreme when he unleashes a genetically engineered decomposition virus that wipes out a significant portion of Japan's population. This act transforms him from a mysterious ally into the primary antagonist, forcing Juna and her friends into a desperate struggle to stop him.

Despite this villainous turn, Chris is portrayed not as a simple monster but as a tragic figure whose ideology is born from witnessing the destructive nature of modern civilization. His motivations are rooted in a deep-seated fatalism, believing that only by resetting the world can it be saved. This makes him a compelling antagonist whose actions, while horrific, stem from a twisted sense of salvation. His character arc reaches its conclusion when he is defeated, but his influence lingers; his ghost later appears and his final words continue to haunt Juna, foreshadowing future threats and leaving a lasting impact on her worldview even after his physical demise.

Chris’s key relationships are defined by his mission. His bond with Juna is the most significant; he is both her creator as the Avatar of Time and her ultimate adversary, forcing her to confront complex questions about life, death, and humanity's right to exist. He is deeply connected to Cindy Klein, a telepath whom he saved and who serves as his devoted translator and protector, harboring strong feelings for him. His powers are considerable, including the ability to leave his disabled body at will, resurrect the dead, create parasitic life forms like the Raaja, and unleash devastating biological weapons on a massive scale.
