Description
Gema is a main character within the Di Gi Charat franchise, recognizable as a small, floating, yellow ball-shaped creature. His form is simple, featuring a tiny upside-down face and very short, thin arms, and he is almost always seen hovering in the air. According to the character's creator, this deliberately uncomplicated design was intended to be easy for anyone to draw. His full name is given as Geman Gemaningballs, and he originates from the planet Di Gi Charat before coming to Earth.

In terms of his role and personality, Gema serves as the guardian and caretaker for the main protagonists, Dejiko and Puchiko. He is characterized as being serious and diligent in his duties, often trying to guide or lecture the young princesses. However, this guidance is typically ineffective, as he tends to hang back and nag, which frequently makes him the target of retribution. His most notable quirk, shared with other characters in the series, is a verbal tic where he ends his sentences with "gema" or "gema gema."

His primary relationship is with Dejiko, which is central to the series' comedy. While he is a loyal companion who genuinely cares for her and her sister, his attempts to scold Dejiko for her lazy or unruly conduct are usually met with her using powerful Eye Beam attacks on him, making him the recurring victim of her violent tendencies. This dynamic positions him as a long-suffering, non-human sidekick who is often used as a comedic punching bag. In other adaptations, such as the prequel Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat, their relationship is notably more affable, with less outright hostility and more minor friction.

Gema's background includes a complex family tree, with deceased parents named Conrad and Johanne, a stepmother named Teresa, a deceased stepfather, as well as several siblings, stepsiblings, and various aunts, uncles, and cousins. His core motivation throughout the series is to fulfill his duty as a guardian. His abilities include carrying a blowgun equipped with tranquilizer darts, though they typically have minimal impact. In one episode, after drinking a large amount of water, he grows to a huge size and his voice becomes deep. He also possesses the odd physical property that his body can stretch and spread out when placed in hot water. While he does not appear in the alternate future storyline Winter Garden, his role across the main series, spin-offs like Di Gi Charat Nyo!, and the visual novel Di Gi Charat Fantasy remains consistent as the diligent yet beleaguered caretaker.
