Yoshiko Kamei
Description
Yoshiko Kamei is a Japanese voice actress born on May 25, 1967, in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. She is affiliated with the talent management firm Mausu Promotion, having been with the company since 1990 when it was formerly known as Geki Production. Kamei began her voice acting career in 1988 after completing her training at a training center affiliated with the agency.
Her path to becoming a voice actor was inspired by a childhood admiration for the work of voice actor Kei Tomiike, whom she later had the opportunity to work with professionally on foreign film dubbing projects. This early inspiration solidified her ambition to pursue a career in animation voice acting.
Kamei is perhaps best known for her long-standing and recurring role as Gema in the Di Gi Charat franchise. She has voiced this character across numerous installments, including the original series, Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat, Di Gi Charat Nyo!, and the more recent Reiwa no Di Gi Charat. This role represents a significant and enduring collaboration with the series.
Throughout her extensive career, Kamei has demonstrated a wide vocal range, frequently taking on roles that require energetic and youthful voices. This versatility is evident in some of her other notable performances. She voices the titular character in Rerere no Tensai Bakabon and plays Tatsuya Jinnō (also known as Yamato Takeru) in Yamato Takeru. In the series Soar High! Isami, she is the voice of Toshi Tsukikage, and in Juuni Senshi Bakuretsu Eto Ranger, she performs the roles of both Gen'en and a Monk. Her film work includes voicing the lead role of Dai-chan in Dai-chan, Daisuki and the character Nyan in both Ultra Nyan: Hoshizora Kara Maiorita Fushigi Neko and its sequel Ultra Nyan 2: Happy Daisakusen. Additional roles span a variety of series, including George in The Dog of Flanders and Kakipi in Magical Meow Meow Taruto.
Beyond animation, Kamei has been highly active in dubbing foreign films and television series into Japanese. Her dubbing work is extensive and includes providing Japanese voices for actors such as Nicholas Hoult in About a Boy, Freddie Highmore in A Good Year, and Kirsten Dunst in Little Women, as well as voicing characters in films like Stand by Me and Jumanji.
Kamei's career is marked by its longevity and breadth. Her ability to portray a vast spectrum of characters, from young boys and talking animals to a diverse array of female roles, has established her as a consistently present and versatile talent in the Japanese voice acting industry for over three decades.
