Description
Gema is a central character in the anime Di Gi Charat Nyo, recognizable for his simple yet distinctive appearance. He is essentially a floating, yellow, rubber-like sphere with very thin arms that end in small circles serving as hands. His face consists of a tiny, simplistic set of eyes and a mouth, which are positioned upside down relative to his body, a detail that is presented as normal for him. Due to his round shape, he has no discernible top or bottom, and he typically moves by bouncing or floating through the air as he lacks legs.
His designated role is that of a guardian and a mentor to the cat-eared alien princess Dejiko, having accompanied her to Earth from their home planet. In this capacity, he often attempts to give her advice and guidance. A defining trait of the character is his unique speech pattern, as he consistently ends his sentences with the suffix -gema. In the Nyo series, it is revealed that Gema is male.
Personality-wise, Gema is depicted as serious, diligent, and talkative. He is genuinely concerned with Dejiko's welfare and frequently tries to stop her from acting on her impulsive and sometimes reckless ideas. However, this caretaker role is a difficult one, as Dejiko rarely listens to him. His attempts to correct her behavior or offer sage counsel are met with resistance, and he is often the victim of her volatile temper. Dejiko frequently takes out her frustrations on him, either by physically abusing him or by firing her powerful eyebeams in his direction. This makes Gema a long-suffering sidekick who, despite his best intentions and his designated position as a mentor, is almost always unsuccessful in his efforts to control or properly guide his charge.
His relationship with Dejiko is the most central to his role in the story. The dynamic is one of constant, one-sided conflict where his diligent scolding is met with bullying and violence, creating much of the physical comedy in the series. Beyond his dynamic with Dejiko, Gema also has clear relationships with the other main characters. He is a companion to Puchiko, another young alien girl who lives on Earth. Furthermore, he has a history with the antagonist group Black Gema Gema, who are his former subordinates. In a specific episode of Di Gi Charat Nyo, Gema is even shown in a personified, human-like form, which is noted as a surprising revelation. Another curious attribute is his reaction to hot water; when he enters a bath, the tension in his body is released, causing his form to spread and stretch out significantly.
In terms of abilities, aside from his power of flight, Gema possesses a few notable skills. His most significant tool is a blowgun, which he uses to shoot tranquilizer darts. However, these darts generally have little to no effect on other characters, further highlighting his ineffectiveness. While he does not possess the destructive eye beams that Dejiko is famous for, he is frequently on the receiving end of her attack, a technique that effortlessly incapacitates him.
