Description
Dejiko, whose full title is Di Gi Charat and whose real name is Chocola, is the central character of the multimedia franchise of the same name. She is an alien princess from the planet Di Gi Charat, which she fled alongside her younger companion, Puchiko, and their guardian, Gema. Her backstory varies across different series adaptations; in some versions, she comes to Earth as part of a princess training journey, while in others, she is escaping an invasion or simply pursuing her dream of becoming an idol singer.
Dejiko is instantly recognizable as a catgirl. Her most consistent appearance features bright green hair and green eyes, though some later adaptations have briefly altered her eye color to red. She wears a distinctive maid-like uniform composed of a white and navy blue dress, complemented by large cat bells tied into her hair with ribbons. On top of her head sits a set of white cat ears with pink insides, which feature large, non-functional yellow or lime-colored cat eyes. She is never without her white gloves, boots, and a white tail, which together complete her feline aesthetic. While this is her signature look, she appears differently in specific series, such as the super-deformed style in "Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat" and as a young adult with regular clothes in "Winter Garden".
Despite her cute and charming exterior, Dejiko's personality is famously a subversion of the innocent moe archetype. She is often portrayed as vain, selfish, short-tempered, and incredibly stubborn. She can be lazy, rarely applying herself to work without a clear incentive, and is prone to giving up when tasks become difficult or uninteresting. Her behavior is frequently malicious and petty, and she has little patience for those she considers annoying. This is most famously expressed through her special ability: firing powerful, destructive beams of energy from her eyes, which she uses on anyone who provokes her, from rivals to her own guardian. These tendencies are played for comedic effect, and beneath her abrasive surface, she occasionally shows a good heart and a genuine, if hidden, concern for her friends. One of her most enduring and recognizable traits is her verbal tic, as she ends nearly every sentence she speaks with the cat-like sound "nyo".
Dejiko's primary motivation is often her aspiration to become a famous idol singer, a goal that drives her to work at a store called Gamers in the Akihabara district of Tokyo. Her role in the story is typically as an employee of Gamers, where she causes chaos and gets into arguments with her co-worker and rival, Rabi~en~Rose, a human girl who also aspires to be an idol. Her key relationships are with her sidekick Puchiko, who has a quieter and sharper-tongued personality that contrasts with Dejiko's fiery nature, and with the floating, long-suffering Gema, who often finds himself the target of her eye-beams. Her rivalry with the more skilled but less fortunate Rabi~en~Rose is a central dynamic, often leading to destructive fights within the store.
Throughout the various anime and manga series, Dejiko shows a notable capacity for change depending on the continuity. In the prequel series "Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat," she is a much younger and significantly kinder child, motivated by a desire to spread happiness, though she still retains a stubborn streak. In stark contrast, the series "Winter Garden" presents an alternate future where she is a twenty-year-old young woman. In this incarnation, she has matured into a gentle, soft-spoken, and responsible person working in a maid café, having lost her violent temper and childish selfishness, and is even capable of developing a romantic interest. In terms of abilities, beyond her signature and highly destructive Laser Eye Beam, other depictions have occasionally given her additional powers, such as the ability to change her size. Regardless of the continuity, her design, speech pattern, and unpredictable temperament remain the core elements that define Dejiko as a character.
