Description
Cody Hida, known in Japan as Iori Hida, is one of the main characters from the anime Digimon Adventure 02. He is the youngest member of the new generation of DigiDestined but often acts as the most serious and mature of the group. Cody lives in an apartment building in Odaiba with his mother and his grandfather, Chikara Hida, who is also his kendo instructor and the primary male influence in his life following the death of his father. He was first exposed to the Digital World as a young child in 1999, when he was a passenger on an airplane that was attacked by a rogue Digimon and subsequently saved by MegaKabuterimon and Garudamon.

Cody is characterized by his strong sense of justice and a very black-and-white worldview, which initially makes him rigid and inflexible in his judgments of others. He holds himself to an extremely high standard and struggles with the concept of lying, even for what others might consider a good reason, and is often seen as being overly serious for his age. His wisdom and stoic demeanor belie his youth, and he is far more interested in understanding the motivations of people than the mechanics of the Digital World itself. He values honesty and reliability above all else, traits that are reflected in the two Digi-Eggs he possesses: the Digi-Egg of Knowledge and the Digi-Egg of Reliability.

Initially, Cody struggles with self-doubt, fearing that his inexperience makes him a burden to his friends. A defining early challenge for him involves overcoming his fear of the sea to pilot a submersible and seek help from the older DigiDestined Joe Kido. During this incident, he is forced to tell a lie to get Joe’s assistance, which makes Cody feel he is unworthy of the Digi-Egg of Reliability. With Joe's reassurance that a small falsehood to save friends does not negate his inherent trustworthiness, Cody is able to activate the Digi-Egg and allow his partner, Armadillomon, to Armor Digivolve into Submarimon.

One of Cody’s most significant story arcs revolves around his refusal to accept Ken Ichijouji into the team after Ken’s redemption as the Digimon Emperor. Because of his strong moral code and the influence of his late father, who was a police officer, Cody is unable to easily forgive Ken for the pain he caused the Digimon. This stubbornness creates tension within the group and poses a risk to their unity when facing powerful enemies like BlackWarGreymon. Over time, through shared battles and witnessing Ken’s genuine remorse, Cody’s rigid stance gradually softens, and by the Christmas of that year, he fully accepts Ken as a friend and comrade.

Cody is partnered with Armadillomon, a laid-back Digimon who speaks with a regional dialect and often serves as a calming, humorous counterbalance to Cody’s intense earnestness. Their partnership requires Cody to learn flexibility. When the time comes for his Digimon to achieve a new form through DNA Digivolution with T.K.'s Digimon, Angemon, Cody first realizes he must better understand T.K.’s own inner turmoil and anger. By seeking out T.K.’s older brother, Matt, to learn about the trauma T.K. experienced in the first Digital World adventure, Cody facilitates the evolution of Ankylomon and Angemon into the powerful Shakkoumon. Later in the series, Cody is forced to confront the harsh realities of combat when Shakkoumon must destroy MarineDevimon to protect a hospital, an act that shakes his moral certainties.

Cody’s personal motivation is deeply tied to the memory of his father, Hiroki Hida. He learns that his father was a childhood friend of the main antagonist, Yukio Oikawa, and that they shared a dream of visiting the Digital World together. This connection gives Cody a unique perspective on the final conflict. When the villain MaloMyotismon traps the children in an illusion that shows them their deepest desires, Cody’s vision is of being reunited with his father and showing him the Digital World. After the final battle, he demonstrates his compassion by attempting to save the dying Oikawa, witnessing the villain’s body transform into butterflies that restore peace to the Digital World.

Throughout Digimon Adventure 02 and subsequent films, Cody’s abilities on the battlefield are tied to Armadillomon’s various evolutions. Using the Digi-Egg of Knowledge, Armadillomon becomes the insectoid Digmon, a powerful digger whose motto is "Wisdom is as hard as steel." Using the Digi-Egg of Reliability, he becomes Submarimon, a submarine-like Digimon designed for underwater combat. As an Ankylomon, he is a sturdy, armored dinosaur, and as part of Shakkoumon, a mysterious and ancient ceramic-like creature. Years after his initial adventures, Cody’s development culminates in his chosen career path. In the series epilogue set in 2027, Cody has grown up to become a highly respected defense lawyer, a profession that perfectly aligns with his lifelong commitment to justice, integrity, and his desire to help people. He is also shown to be married and has a daughter whose partner Digimon is an Upamon.
