MetalGreymon is the cyborg Perfect-level form of Agumon that appears in the anime Digimon Adventure 02. In this series, the evolution is tied to Taichi Yagami, the original human partner of Agumon, though Taichi had surrendered the power of the Crest of Courage before the start of the series in order to free the Four Holy Beasts. As a result, Agumon is unable to evolve into MetalGreymon for most of the story. The only instance of MetalGreymon in Digimon Adventure 02 occurs in the episode titled The Enemy is MetalGreymon, when the Digimon Emperor uses a newly developed Dark Spiral to forcibly dark-evolve Taichi’s captured Greymon into MetalGreymon and controls it to attack the new group of DigiDestined. This version of MetalGreymon is a corrupted form with a Virus attribute, acting as an unwilling weapon under the Emperor’s command rather than a heroic ally. Its appearance is that of a large dinosaur-like cyborg with orange skin, metal plating covering parts of its body, red eyes, purple wings, and a skull-like motif. MetalGreymon is known for its immense destructive power, with attacks such as Giga Blaster, a powerful energy cannon concealed within its armored chest. Its attack power is described as rivaling that of a nuclear warhead, capable of completely annihilating weaker Digimon. In this controlled state, MetalGreymon lacks any independent personality or motivation; it exists solely as a tool for the Digimon Emperor. Key relationships include its partnership with Taichi, though this bond is disrupted because Taichi no longer possesses the Crest of Courage, and its brief antagonistic role against the new DigiDestined such as Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori. The event highlights the Digimon Emperor’s cruel experimentation with the Dark Spiral and foreshadows the dangers of forced evolution. MetalGreymon’s development is minimal in this series because it appears only under external control, but the episode underscores the tragic loss of the original bond between Taichi and Agumon, as well as the consequences of surrendering the crest. Its notable abilities include its reinforced armor, flight via its wings, and the Giga Blaster attack. The MetalGreymon form ultimately reverts after the Dark Spiral’s influence is broken, and it does not reappear in Digimon Adventure 02 afterward.
