Description
Lee Jenrya, also known in some localizations as Henry Wong, is one of the three main protagonists of Digimon Tamers. He is a ten-year-old boy of mixed heritage, with a Chinese father and a Japanese mother. He has short blue hair and gray eyes, and he is the elder brother of Lee Shaochung, who later becomes a tamer herself. Henry is a thoughtful and mature child, often displaying a calm and patient demeanor that sets him apart from his peers. His most defining trait is a strong pacifist inclination, rooted in a past incident where he accidentally hurt a neighbor while practicing martial arts and felt a disturbing thrill from the power he wielded. This experience led him to vow never to fight again and to avoid conflict whenever possible.

Henry becomes the partner of Terriermon after the Digimon emerges from a game on his computer. Initially, he tries to prevent Terriermon from battling, which creates tension between them, as Terriermon has natural instincts to fight. Over time, Henry learns that avoiding all conflict is not always possible or responsible, and he begins to accept that fighting can be necessary to protect others. His primary motivation is to protect life and prevent unnecessary violence, and this sense of responsibility extends to his family, especially his younger sister. He is deeply protective of her and becomes frustrated when she puts herself in danger.

Henry’s role in the story is that of a grounded, strategic thinker who often provides a different perspective from the more impulsive Takato and the competitive Rika. He is not a natural leader but grows into a capable one, using his analytical mind and computer skills to help the group. His relationship with Takato evolves from a sempai-kouhai dynamic to a close friendship, and he becomes a source of emotional support for others. His bond with Rika is built on mutual respect, despite their differing views on fighting.

A major part of Henry’s development centers on his family. His father, Jiang-yu, is one of the Monster Makers, the programmers who originally created the Digimon. This revelation strains their relationship, as Henry feels betrayed by his father’s secret work. However, by the series’ end, Henry comes to forgive his father, understanding that difficult choices had to be made. This forgiveness is a key moment of emotional growth.

Henry’s notable abilities include proficiency in martial arts, particularly tai chi, which he also teaches to Terriermon. He is knowledgeable in computers and technology, inheriting this interest from his father. In battle, he often acts as a strategist, using his calm mind to assess situations and coordinate with his teammates. His bond with Terriermon deepens to the point where they can perform a Bio-merge, fusing their bodies and minds to become the powerful Mega-level Digimon MegaGargomon. This evolution represents Henry’s full acceptance of his role as a tamer and his willingness to fight for the right reasons while still holding onto his core values of protecting life.
