Description
In the Digimon Tamers anime, the character known primarily as Guardromon is first introduced in his more powerful form, Andromon. When the group of Tamers becomes separated in the Digital World, they encounter an Andromon living near a village of Gekomon. This Andromon is a lone fighter who has been waging a personal campaign against the tyrannical Orochimon, a serpentine Digimon who has enslaved the Gekomon and forced them to brew sake for him. Driven by a strong sense of justice, Andromon repeatedly attempts to liberate the village, but each battle against the much stronger Orochimon ends in defeat and severe damage to his own body.
His motivations are entirely selfless and heroic, focused on freeing the Gekomon from their servitude despite the personal cost. The strain of his constant fighting catches up with him, and after a particularly brutal encounter, he has lost so much energy and sustained so much damage that he is forced to degenerate into his lower form, Guardromon. It is in this state that he forms a key relationship with the young Tamer, Kazu Shioda. Kazu helps to heal him using data from the Gekomon's drinks and, impressed by his brave and determined nature, befriends him. Together, they devise a plan to stow away inside drink barrels to infiltrate Orochimon's island and rescue a captured friend. After Orochimon is finally defeated with the help of the other Tamers, Guardromon officially becomes Kazu's partner Digimon.
In terms of personality, Guardromon is a protector by nature. As a mechanical, Android-type Digimon, he is a loyal and faithful defender who fights for justice. However, his personality has a subtle humorous side, as he tends to be somewhat foppish or prone to bad luck in his endeavors. He can be very literal in his understanding, which sometimes leads to a lack of comprehension regarding Kazu's particular sense of humor. Despite not being the most powerful or flashy member of the team, he is experienced and fights surprisingly well, often using clever tactics to support his allies.
After becoming a partner, Guardromon remains in his Champion-level form and never digivolves back into Andromon during the events of the series. He participates in several major battles, including the fight against the rogue Beelzemon, where he notably fires a missile to save the Mega-level Dukemon from a fatal attack. His role is that of a reliable supporting fighter who provides cover fire and strategic assistance. He also plays a part in the final struggle against the D-Reaper and in the film Runaway Locomon, where his ability to fly is showcased as he pushes a train car at high speed and uses his missile attacks to destroy invading Parasimon. When the Tamers and their Digimon are forced to part ways at the end of the series, Guardromon degenerates further to his In-Training form, Kapurimon, before returning to the Digital World.
Regarding his notable abilities, even in his Champion form, Guardromon retains impressive firepower. His signature attack is Guardian Barrage, also known as Destruction Grenade, which involves firing a volley of whistling missiles from retractable launchers in his forearms. He is also equipped with rocket jets mounted on his back, granting him the capacity for flight, which he uses effectively in combat and rescue situations.
