Description
Curtis Newton, known as Capitan Futuro, is the protagonist of the 1978 anime series of the same name. He is a tall, athletic, and handsome young man with brown hair and brown eyes, whose real name is Curtis Newton.
His background is rooted in tragedy. Curtis was born to the brilliant scientists Roger and Elaine Newton in a secret laboratory hidden in the Tycho Crater on the Moon. They fled Earth to escape the criminal intentions of Victor Corvo, a corrupt politician who sought to exploit Roger Newton's inventions. When Curtis was an infant, Corvo tracked them to the Moon and killed both of his parents. However, Corvo and his henchmen were then destroyed by two of the Newtons' creations: Grag, a powerful robot, and Otho, a shape-shifting android. This left the orphaned Curtis to be raised by this unlikely trio, which also included Professor Simon Wright, a colleague of his father whose brain had been transplanted into a mobile, transparent life-support case.
Raised in isolation on the Moon, Curtis was rigorously trained by his guardians. Simon Wright, now called the Living Brain, served as his mentor and tutored him extensively in all fields of science. Grag and Otho, despite their constant bickering, trained him in combat, athletics, and other practical skills, forging him into a physical and intellectual marvel. From this upbringing, he developed a strong, unshakable moral compass and a profound sense of responsibility, choosing to dedicate his exceptional abilities to protecting the innocent and fighting injustice across the solar system.
As an adult, Curtis adopts the alias Capitan Futuro to conceal his identity while he works. He pilots the highly advanced spaceship the Comet, operating from his hidden lunar base alongside his surrogate family, who are collectively known as the Futuremen. His primary role is that of a troubleshooter for the Solar Coalition, often summoned by its president, James Carthew, to confront threats that are too great for conventional forces. His motivations are not driven by revenge but by a genuine desire to use his scientific genius for the betterment of humanity and all free races of the solar system. His most persistent and formidable enemy is Ull Quorn, the son of his parents' killer, a scientific genius whose intellect rivals his own.
Key relationships define his life. Professor Simon Wright is his primary father figure, whose wisdom guides him. Grag and Otho are his loyal brothers-in-arms, providing muscle, infiltration skills, and companionship. He also works closely with Joan Randall, an agent of the Planetary Police, for whom he has a clear romantic affection, a feeling that appears mutual. Other key allies include veteran space marshal Ezra Gurney. While the anime focuses on his heroic exploits as a fully-formed champion, his development is shown through his interactions with his unique family and his unwavering commitment to his mission.
Capitan Futuro is a paragon of human potential. His most notable ability is his unparalleled scientific genius, making him the most brilliant mind in the known solar system with expertise across all disciplines. He is also an Olympic-level athlete, possessing tremendous strength, endurance, agility, and mastery of several martial arts. He is an expert pilot for any type of vehicle and a superb marksman, typically using two proton guns as his signature weapons. For equipment, he wears a sealed flight suit that acts as armor and has a built-in rocket pack for short-term flight, allowing him to survive in the vacuum of space. His utility belt carries a variety of scientific instruments and his proton pistols. Among his other tools is a device on his hand, often depicted as a ring or watch face, set with nine gems representing the planets of the solar system, which he can use for various scientific purposes, including a form of hypnosis. He is also a master of disguise and an expert in infiltration, skills that allow him to gather intelligence on his enemies from within.
