Description
Jane Andrews is a friend and classmate of Anne Shirley in the anime adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. She is depicted as a girl with black hair that falls to her shoulders, dark eyes, and she is frequently seen wearing a dress with an apron and a ponytail secured with a ribbon. Her character is defined by her humble, practical, and conscientious nature. Unlike the imaginative and spirited Anne, Jane is sensible and grounded, often following rules and conventions without question. This lack of a lively imagination is noted by Anne, who finds Jane’s contributions to their Story Club to be rather dull, as Jane herself admits to feeling silly when reading stories aloud.

Within the social circle of Avonlea, Jane is a steady and reliable presence. She is a good friend to Anne, Diana Barry, and Ruby Gillis. Although she is not as brilliant or witty as some of her peers, possessing a talent more negative than positive in that she rarely makes a remark worth listening to, her key strength is her natural tact. She makes a conscious effort never to say anything that would hurt another person’s feelings, making her a safe and unproblematic companion. A specific interaction unique to the anime shows Jane complimenting Anne on having a beautiful nose.

Jane’s primary motivation is academic and professional success. She is a diligent student who performs well in school and joins Miss Stacy’s special class with the goal of becoming a teacher and attending Queen’s Academy. Her practical worldview extends to her philosophy on education. When she begins her teaching career, she does not hesitate to support the use of physical discipline, such as using the strap on students, a position that stands in stark contrast to Anne’s more progressive and gentle principles. After Anne leaves Avonlea to attend Redmond College, Jane returns to serve as her replacement, teaching the young Davy and Dora Keith, though her strict methods are noted by her students.

Jane’s character undergoes a significant, if conventional, development from a schoolgirl to a married woman. After teaching in Newbridge and then Avonlea, she moves west, where she meets and marries a millionaire named Mr. Inglis from Winnipeg. Her wedding is a grand affair of white satin, lace, and diamonds, transforming the prim and plain schoolteacher into a wealthy bride. This marriage represents a stark departure from her earlier, more modest life, though it is a future she and her friend Ruby Gillis had dreamt of. In this way, Jane ultimately achieves a different kind of success, moving away from her humble origins in Avonlea to a life of affluence. Her brother, Billy, is notable as the first man to propose marriage to Anne, delivering his unromantic offer of marriage for the sake of the farm through his sister Jane.
