Description
Gust, whose full name is Gust Turbulence, is a salvager who operates in the same line of work as the protagonist, Aika Sumeragi, in a world where much of the Earth lies submerged underwater. Coming from a privileged background as the son of a company president, he nevertheless chooses to be independent and works as a salvager to build a reputation in his own name. He is twenty-four years old during the events of the original series.
On the surface, Gust can appear brash and abrasive, but he is a highly skilled operative. His personality balances being a jerk with a heart of gold, often getting into the right place at the right time to claim his bounties. He is also known for having a preference for older women. Despite his tough exterior, he is a capable and effective professional in the competitive salvaging field.
One of Gust's primary motivations is his persistent but unrequited romantic interest in Aika Sumeragi, as he frequently asks her out on dates and is met with refusal. This dynamic creates a competitive undercurrent between them, as he is sometimes seen as a rival who challenges her for contracts and bounties, while also working alongside her as an uneasy ally. His affections and rivalry often manifest in a stalker-like tendency to follow her, though ultimately his intentions are good. In the story, he is a recurring figure who engages in missions and confrontations alongside Aika and her associates, including a mission involving the retrieval of the mysterious element known as Lagu. He also shares a partnership with a more experienced salvager named B.A. Bandora, a veteran woman with whom he works closely, even if they do not always see eye to eye.
Across different points in the timeline, his character shows some development. In the prequel series Aika R-16: Virgin Mission, which takes place ten years before the original OVA, he is depicted as a fourteen-year-old working as a waiter on a private cruiser, showing a very different side of his life before becoming the brash salvager he is known as later. In terms of abilities, Gust is considered a badass normal, meaning he possesses no superhuman powers but relies on his high level of skill, resourcefulness, and experience to handle dangerous situations. He is known to be physically capable and is shown undertaking difficult retrieval missions that require quick thinking and combat ability.
