Description
Ikkyu is a central antagonist and the shadowy leader of the I-Jin, a group prominent in the narrative. He is not the historical Zen monk of the same name but rather a clone created from that 15th-century figure. His background as a clone informs his identity and his grand, detached schemes for humanity.

In terms of personality, Ikkyu is portrayed as a calculating and enigmatic figure. He is a planner who operates from the shadows, orchestrating elaborate plots with a cold and detached demeanor. His motivations stem from a desire to purify humanity by eliminating those he considers wasteful individuals. This goal is pursued through a drastic and catastrophic plan involving rocketing into space and broadcasting Beethoven's Suicide Symphony to the entire world, an act intended to cause mass destruction.

Ikkyu's role in the story is that of the primary antagonist. He is the mastermind behind the I-Jin’s operations and the final threat that the protagonist must confront. His actions directly precipitate the climax of the series, as his plan to launch the rocket forms the central conflict. He is ultimately thwarted in this endeavor by the main character.

His key relationships are complex and manipulative. He is romantically involved with a clone of Nancy Makuhari, a famous historical figure. Concerned about the loyalties of the original Nancy, who served as a spy for him within the British Library, Ikkyu created a second, fully compliant clone of her. This second clone becomes the mother of his child, Junior, establishing him as a father. The original Nancy, who developed a friendship with the protagonist, is ultimately the one who kills Ikkyu, ending his plans aboard his own rocket.

Regarding development, the narrative reveals his true nature as a clone and the extent of his manipulative relationships, particularly with the two Nancys. His defeat marks the end of his scheme. His notable abilities are tied to art and illusion; he can create lifelike illusions using paintings. He also wields a distinctive skull-topped staff, from which he can ignite green flames in the eye sockets or draw a concealed sword for combat.
