Description
Mao Daidouji is a first-year student at Kisaragi Girls' High School who initially belongs to the school's judo team. She is recruited into the newly formed baseball team by team manager Nene Mouri after it becomes clear that no one else on the team can catch the overpowering pitches of ace pitcher Ryo Hayakawa. Mao stands out physically due to her tall and imposing build, standing 175.5 centimeters, but her personality is the opposite: she is extremely shy, timid, and self-conscious. On the judo team, she was mocked by her teammates for her weight, being called hurtful nicknames such as "Mao The Cow" and "Big Ox," which deepened her lack of confidence.
Once she joins the baseball team, Mao takes on the position of catcher, batting eighth in the lineup. She bats and throws right-handed. Her prior experience in judo, where she was part of a team that won national championships, gives her strong physical strength and quick reflexes, which are essential for handling Ryo's blazing fastballs. Initially, her bashfulness hampers her performance, but through Ryo's patient encouragement and the support of her new teammates, Mao begins to understand and trust in the value of teamwork. This relationship with Ryo is central to her development: Ryo teaches her that being part of a team means relying on others and believing in her own abilities.
Over the course of the series, Mao gradually overcomes her shyness and becomes a dependable member of the Kisaragi Girls' Baseball Team. Her growth is marked by her increasing willingness to speak up, her improved confidence behind the plate, and her ability to form genuine friendships with the other players. She remains gentle and soft-spoken, but she no longer lets her fear of judgment hold her back. Her notable ability is her unique capacity to catch Ryo's exceptionally powerful pitches, a skill that no one else on the team possesses and which is vital to the team's success. Her judo background also contributes to her balance and physical resilience as a catcher. Mao's arc is one of quiet transformation, as she moves from a bullied, insecure outsider to a valued and integral part of the team's quest to reach Koshien.
