Description
Briareos Hecatonchires is one of the two central protagonists of the Appleseed franchise, serving as a highly skilled ESWAT (Extra Special Weapons and Tactics) officer alongside his partner and lover, Deunan Knute. His name is derived from Greek mythology, referencing Briareus the Vigorous, one of the hundred-armed giants known as the Hecatonchires.

Briareos has a troubled and complex past. Originally from the Mediterranean, he was exploited as a child by the KGB to perform acts of terrorism. He managed to break free by killing the unit's operations commander, an act that placed him on the international most wanted list as an assassin. He eventually sought political asylum in the former United States. His path crossed with Deunan Knute through her father, who was an agent in a special security force, and the two began operating as partners. During their service, Briareos was caught in a massive explosion at the age of thirty-one. The only way to save his life was to undergo a complete full-body cyborg replacement, a transformation that defined the rest of his existence.

As a cyborg, Briareos represents the pinnacle of cybernetic technology in his world. His body is almost entirely artificial, with only a fraction of his original biology remaining, yet he suffers little loss of humanity. His outer skin is elastic and capable of feeling physical sensation, and its temperature can be adjusted to his preference. One of his most distinctive features is his head, which mounts eight eyes: four in his face, two at the bases of his prominent rabbit ear-like sensors facing rearward, and two at the tips of those sensors, allowing him to see around corners. His original human brain is augmented by an auxiliary brain that acts as an information processor, capable of handling conceptual data rather than just numerical information. His body is designated as a Hecatonchires system, a cybernetic controller named after the mythological giants that allows him to control dozens of limbs or even other cyborg bodies independently without additional strain on his mind. This system is exceptionally rare, and Briareos is known to be the only cyborg to have successfully integrated with it, as all other test subjects perished.

Despite his formidable mechanical frame, Briareos retains many human biological functions. He maintains a cardiovascular and digestive system, allowing him to eat and drink, and he has the capacity to become inebriated. His human brain was spared damage during the incident that necessitated his cyborg body, so he retains all of his original memories and personality traits, though he now speaks through a polyphonic speech synthesizer. He is still vulnerable to death from injury, illness, and age, and repeated severe damage has led him to contemplate his own physical limitations.

His relationship with Deunan Knute is the emotional anchor of the story. They met and began working together before the outbreak of World War III and became lovers during that time. After the war, they moved together to the utopian city of Olympus, where they joined the ESWAT unit. Their partnership is one of deep mutual trust and professional respect; while Briareos is a powerful frontline operative, he acknowledges that Deunan’s marksmanship and strategic skills often surpass his own. His primary motivation is to protect Deunan and serve as her point man, a role he fulfills with unwavering dedication. Over the course of the narrative, he confronts the psychological and ethical dilemmas of his cyborg existence, embodying the intersection between advanced technology and enduring humanity. His development often centers on the tension between his powerful, artificial body and his very real, very human soul.
