Description
General Edward Uranus III serves as the supreme commander of the Olympus Regular Army in the 2004 and 2007 anime interpretations of Appleseed. A seasoned military leader with a long career spanning various armed forces of the late 2100s, including the armies of the General Administration Agency and the early Central Management Bureau, he was later appointed to his position as head of the reformed Olympus Regular Army after the Central Management Bureau shifted its allegiance to the paramilitary group E.S.W.A.T.
General Uranus is characterized by a deep-seated and vocal distrust of bioroids, the artificially created humans who form a significant portion of Olympus's population and its government. He is an extremist who views bioroids as a fundamental threat to natural humanity. Although he has come to unwillingly accept their presence enough to interact with them on a political level, his acceptance is fragile, hinging entirely on maintaining the status quo of bioroid lifespans and reproductive limitations. His personality is defined by a reactionary anger and a commitment to what he sees as the preservation of the human race, a conviction that makes him a staunch and formidable opponent of the bioroid-led administration.
The primary motivation driving General Uranus is his desire to see humans regain control of the Olympus Legislative House from the bioroids. He believes the utopian city should be governed by natural-born humans and is willing to go to extreme lengths to achieve this goal. His animosity reaches a peak when he leads a faction that destroys the bioroid breeding grounds and the D-Tank, actions that would not only prevent bioroids from reproducing but would also lead to the mass genocide of all existing bioroid life by denying them the life extensions they require. To him, this destruction is a necessary step to eliminate the bioroid presence and ensure humanity's future.
In the story, General Uranus acts as a primary antagonist, leading the regular army in open hostilities against the city's government and its protectors in E.S.W.A.T. His conflict with the bioroid Prime Minister, Athena Areios, is central to the plot, representing the deep political and social divisions within Olympus. However, his key relationships are not solely adversarial. It is implied that he has a personal history with the Knute family, as he claims to have known the scientists Carl and Gilliam Knute quite well. Furthermore, it is suggested but not confirmed that a younger Edward Uranus was the leader of a Central Management Bureau military insurgence that resulted in the death of Deunan Knute's mother, Gilliam, at a bioroid development facility.
The character undergoes a significant development when he discovers that his reactionary anger and actions have been manipulated by a higher power. It is revealed that the Seven Elders, a human council that provides emotional guidance to the supercomputer Gaia, are the true masterminds behind the destruction of the bioroid facilities. They manipulated Uranus into acting, which in turn prompted Gaia to authorize a counteractive measure to protect the bioroids, one that would lead to the genocide of humanity. Upon realizing that his hatred has been used as a tool to bring about the very destruction of his own people, Uranus immediately calls a truce and surrenders. His decision to stop the conflict helps save humanity from extinction, showing that his primary loyalty to the human race overrides his personal vendetta against bioroids.
General Uranus does not possess any superhuman or advanced technological abilities himself. His notable abilities are purely strategic and military, stemming from his extensive combat experience and his leadership of the Olympus Regular Army. He is a capable and high-ranking commander, able to lead his forces in open warfare against the advanced tactical unit E.S.W.A.T. His power derives from his authority, his tactical knowledge, and the loyalty of the human soldiers under his command. Following the events of the main conflict, the Olympus Regular Army appears to have been disbanded, and the character is not mentioned again in subsequent stories.
