Description
Masumi Usui is a member of the Spring Troupe and the second actor to join the Mankai Company. He is a second-year student at Hanasaki Academy, stands 175 centimeters tall, has black hair with lighter bangs and dark purple eyes, and was born on March 30. His hobby is listening to music, with a focus on post-rock and progressive rock. Masumi joins the troupe after falling in love at first sight with the director, Izumi Tachibana, while watching her perform in a street show. His parents frequently travel abroad for work, leaving him to live alone in Japan, and this lack of supervision has contributed to a carefree and self-directed lifestyle.
In terms of personality, Masumi is initially cold, indifferent, and dismissive toward almost everyone except the director. He has a sharp tongue and is not afraid to speak rudely to strangers or his fellow troupe members, which often earns him a reputation as a troublemaker. However, this demeanor changes abruptly when he is around Izumi. In her presence, he becomes openly affectionate, flirtatious, and intensely focused on gaining her attention and approval. He frequently makes direct declarations of his feelings and seeks her praise above all else. His behavior can be described as that of a lovesick individual who prioritizes the director's recognition over any other goal.
Masumi's primary motivation for acting is his infatuation with the director. He has little intrinsic interest in theater itself but joined the Mankai Company specifically to be close to Izumi and to receive her praise. This single-minded drive influences nearly all of his actions within the troupe. Despite his lack of prior acting experience, he possesses a natural instinct for performance and an exceptional ability to memorize lines quickly, which allows him to stand out even as an amateur.
Within the story, Masumi serves as the second recruit for the Spring Troupe and plays a key role in the formation of the group. His presence introduces both comedic tension, through his obsessive devotion to the director, and interpersonal conflict, due to his blunt and uncooperative attitude toward others. Over time, his interactions with the troupe members and his participation in rehearsals and performances lead to gradual development, as he begins to engage more seriously with the craft of acting beyond his initial infatuation.
Key relationships include his bond with the director, Izumi Tachibana, who is the sole focus of his affection and the catalyst for his involvement in the theater company. He shares a dormitory room with Tsuzuru Minagi, and although Masumi can be dismissive, their living arrangement forces a degree of coexistence. His relationship with the other Spring Troupe members, such as Sakuya Sakuma, is often strained by his rudeness, but his natural talent occasionally earns him a measure of grudging respect.
Notable abilities include his sharp line memorization, strong instinct for reading a script, and a natural aptitude for picking up skills quickly without extensive practice. His determination when focused on a goal, especially when motivated by the director, allows him to surprise others with his dedication in specific situations, such as secretly practicing cooking in the middle of the night to prepare a meal for Izumi. Despite his often aloof exterior, he demonstrates a capacity for quiet, persistent effort when it matters to him personally.
