Description
Gawl, whose name is also romanized as Gauron or Kowloon, is a primary antagonist in Full Metal Panic!. He is a terrorist, mercenary, and a high-ranking executive of the secret organization Amalgam, using the codename Mr. Fe, which stands for Iron. His true nationality is Japanese, though he holds multiple citizenships and his real name and exact origins are largely unknown. He is estimated to be around thirty years of age.
Gawl’s personality is defined by extreme sadism, cunning intelligence, and a complete disregard for life, including his own. His worldview was forged during a brutal childhood spent in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge regime, where he was daily witness to mass killings. This environment cultivated a profound and casual cruelty. He is known for employing psychological warfare and excessive violence to achieve his goals, often killing captives in a calculated manner to instill fear and extract information from survivors. Despite his insanity, he possesses an unnaturally calm and calculating demeanor in combat and tactical situations, making him one of the most dangerous terrorists in the world.
Gawl’s primary motivation is a deep-seated, obsessive desire to confront and destroy Sousuke Sagara. The two have a long and personal history, having first encountered each other in Afghanistan during the 1980s. At that time, Gawl served as a Soviet-affiliated mercenary, and it was he who led a massacre that destroyed Sousuke’s guerrilla unit, killing nearly everyone the young soldier knew. While not his only goal, this personal vendetta drives many of his actions, and he repeatedly engineers scenarios specifically to draw Sousuke into a fight. His broader professional activities for Amalgam include assassinations, weapons smuggling, and acquiring individuals known as Whispered to exploit their advanced technological knowledge.
Within the story, Gawl serves as the central personal villain for Sousuke and the Mithril organization. He is the primary threat in the first story arc, hijacking a plane that Sousuke and the Whispered girl Kaname Chidori are on. He later orchestrates a plot to infiltrate and seize control of Mithril’s state-of-the-art submarine, the Tuatha De Danann, which serves as the main base for the protagonists. His role is consistently that of an implacable and recurring nightmare from Sousuke’s past, a physical embodiment of the chaos and violence that Sousuke constantly fights to contain.
His most significant relationship is with Sousuke Sagara. Gawl is a dark mirror to the protagonist, representing what Sousuke could become if consumed by the battlefield. Andrei Kalinin, a former Soviet officer who also encountered Gawl in Afghanistan and later becomes a commander in Mithril, is another key figure from this shared past. Kalinin possesses firsthand knowledge of Gawl’s capabilities and describes him with extreme caution, viewing him as a highly intelligent and unpredictable beast.
Gawl undergoes little to no positive character development; instead, he is a static and unwavering force of chaos. His resilience is remarkable, as he survived a point-blank shot to the head from Sousuke and Kalinin years ago, saved only by a titanium plate that had been surgically embedded in his forehead for reasons that remain unclear. This event seemingly cements his fixation on Sousuke. In a final confrontation, he is ultimately defeated and ejected from his Arm Slave, disappearing into the ocean as his machine self-destructs, though his unconfirmed death continues to hover over the narrative.
In terms of abilities, Gawl is an exceptional physical combatant and a master tactician, described as having the mind of a highly intelligent predator. He is proficient with virtually all forms of weaponry. Most notably, he is one of the most skilled Arm Slave pilots in the world, capable of piloting a machine equipped with the Lambda Driver system with devastating effectiveness. In his first appearance, his skill and use of this technology allow him to effortlessly defeat highly trained Mithril operatives, including Sousuke’s allies. His combination of combat prowess, tactical genius, and sheer ruthlessness makes him a nearly unstoppable adversary.
