Description
Gotoh is a senior butler in the service of the Zoldyck Family, a renowned and deadly lineage of assassins. His origins are rooted in Meteor City, a vast junkyard inhabited by outcasts whose existence is not recorded in any official registry, making his past largely unknowable. Rising through the ranks to become a trusted and high-ranking member of the household staff, Gotoh served the Zoldycks for many years and was entrusted with the care of the family's youngest son, Killua, a responsibility he took very seriously.
In terms of personality, Gotoh presents an enigmatic and intimidating figure. He is unfailingly courteous and refined, as befits his role as a butler, yet he is also strict and unyielding when it comes to the family's rigorous security and secrecy protocols. Despite his cool and composed exterior, he possesses a hidden, hot-blooded intensity comparable to someone like Leorio, though he almost always keeps his temper under tight control. Above all, Gotoh is defined by his profound loyalty and protectiveness toward his masters. He cares for Killua as if the boy were his own son, and Killua himself has mentioned experiencing recurring nightmares of Gotoh chasing him with a knife, suggesting a strict and perhaps fearsome, yet familiar, presence in his upbringing. Gotoh also displays a sympathetic side, showing understanding for the emotional pain of Kikyo Zoldyck when her husband allowed Killua to leave the estate with his friends. He notably hates using tricks or cover-ups, even during games, preferring a more straightforward approach.
Gotoh's primary role within the Zoldyck household is controlling the flow of information, as all contact from outsiders must first go through him before reaching the main house. He is first encountered by Gon Freecss during the Zoldyck Family arc, where he acts as a formidable gatekeeper. When Gon and his friends arrive at the estate to bring Killua back, Gotoh challenges them to a seemingly simple coin toss game. This game, however, has their friend Canary's life at stake and is a calculated test of their resolve and perception. He admits to loathing them for trying to take Killua away and uses the game to express his own paternal feelings and the heartbreak he witnessed from Killua's mother. After Gon passes his test by correctly deducing the coin's location, Gotoh imparts a final lesson, performing a clever trick to show Gon that not everything in the world is as it seems and asking him to take good care of Killua.
His key relationships are primarily defined by his service. His bond with Killua is the most prominent, characterized by deep, fatherly care and a desire to protect him from harm. He is more lenient with Killua compared to other senior butlers like Tsubone. His loyalty also extends to the Zoldyck parents, Silva and Kikyo. Among the other butlers, he is a figure of authority and commands respect from subordinates like Canary and Amane, though he maintains a professional relationship with them.
Gotoh's character undergoes significant development in the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc, where his fate is tragically sealed. Tasked with accompanying Killua and his sister Alluka on their mission to save a dying Gon, Gotoh serves as a negotiator, handling phone calls with Leorio and Morel to arrange their safe passage. After their car is ambushed and driven off a cliff by Illumi, the group is confronted by the magician Hisoka. Realizing the danger, Gotoh orders the other butlers to go ahead while he stays behind to hold Hisoka off. In a desperate battle, Gotoh demonstrates his considerable combat prowess, even temporarily countering Hisoka's Bungee Gum ability with his spinning coins. However, Hisoka ultimately tricks him, leading to Gotoh getting his throat slit. His death is later confirmed, and to spare Killua and Alluka further pain, the Zoldyck family employs a Kiriko, a shape-shifting beast, to pose as the fallen butler.
Gotoh's most notable abilities revolve around his mastery of Nen and his unique choice of weapon: coins. He is an expert fighter, possessing superhuman speed, reflexes, and durability, and is strong enough to open the Zoldycks' Testing Gates. His primary combat technique involves infusing ordinary coins with his aura and firing them from his fingers with devastating speed and force, creating projectiles more powerful than gun bullets. He can also add a rifling effect to the coins, causing them to spin and increasing their damage and penetration power, which he used effectively to neutralize Hisoka's adhesive, elastic Bungee Gum by winding it around the spinning projectiles. Although his Nen type is never officially stated, his techniques suggest proficiency in Emission and Manipulation, and he has demonstrated the use of Gyo to enhance his vision. Beyond his physical and Nen abilities, Gotoh is highly intelligent and calculating. He is a keen observer of human behavior and a master of deception and trickery, skills he employed both in his duties as a gatekeeper and in his final, fatal confrontation.
