Description
Latis, known in the original Japanese version as Lantis, is a central character in the second season of the anime Magic Knight Rayearth 2. He is a tall, powerfully built man with short black hair and piercing blue eyes, typically clad in black armor with a light blue mantle and a golden circlet around his head. His bearing is often reserved and expressionless, which many mistake for coldness or gloom rather than the guardedness it truly is.
His background is deeply tied to Cephiro’s past. Latis is the younger brother of Zagato, the high priest who rebelled against the Pillar system in the first season. Before the events of the series, Latis served as captain of Princess Emeraude’s personal guard. When he became aware of the forbidden love between his brother and the princess, he chose to leave Cephiro rather than witness the inevitable tragedy unfold. He traveled through many worlds, spending the longest period in the technologically advanced planet Autozam, where he formed a close friendship with Eagle Vision, the son of Autozam’s ruler.
Latis’s personality is defined by a quiet intensity and a deep, private sorrow. He is not antisocial, but he speaks sparingly and keeps his motivations hidden, which causes many in Cephiro to regard him with suspicion when he returns after the first season’s conclusion. Beneath his stoic exterior, he is capable of profound loyalty and warmth, though it takes time for these traits to emerge. His primary motivation is a firm rejection of the Pillar system itself, which he holds responsible for the suffering of his brother and Emeraude. He believes that as long as the world depends on a single Pillar whose prayers sustain all existence, the same cycle of tragic love and destruction will repeat endlessly. His return to Cephiro is driven by a resolution to destroy that system, by force if necessary, even if it costs him his life.
In the story, Latis occupies a pivotal role as both a powerful independent agent and a reluctant ally. He initially refuses to side with any faction, but as Cephiro crumbles without a Pillar and three invading worlds vie for control, he becomes an indispensable figure in the fight to defend what remains of the land. His knowledge of magic, his swordsmanship, and his understanding of Autozam’s technology make him uniquely suited to confront the threats from all sides.
Key relationships define much of his development. His friendship with Eagle Vision is one of mutual respect and deep affection, though it becomes strained when Eagle seeks the Pillar’s crown for his own reasons. Latis’s most transformative bond is with Hikaru Shidou, one of the three Magic Knights. Hikaru’s innocent and openhearted nature gradually breaks through his emotional walls. He comes to care for her deeply, and this attachment challenges his single-minded mission, forcing him to reconsider whether total destruction is the only answer. The fairy Primera, who follows him devotedly, holds unrequited feelings for him, but Latis never returns her affection.
Over the course of the season, Latis undergoes significant growth. He begins as a solitary figure focused solely on dismantling the Pillar system, but through his interactions with Hikaru and his ongoing friendship with Eagle, he learns to trust others and to hope for a better outcome than simple annihilation. His willingness to fight alongside the Magic Knights and eventually to accept Hikaru’s love marks a clear shift from isolation to connection.
Latis’s abilities are formidable and rare. He holds the title of Kailu, a magic swordsman skilled in both sorcery and blade combat, and is widely considered the most powerful warrior in Cephiro. He studied magic under the master mage Clef and is said to possess power equal to or even greater than his brother Zagato. He wields a sword whose blade is made of pure light and can disappear when not in use. His spells include powerful lightning attacks such as Thunder and Cresta, a protective barrier, and he can summon magical creatures, most notably a flying horse. His combat prowess is such that he can destroy a battle robot with a single strike, and his heart is described by the villainous Debonair as fearfully strong, making him a target she desperately wants to control.
