Description
Aguila, whose full name is Eagle Vision, serves as the commander of the NSX, the advanced combat ship representing the nation of Autozam. His primary mission is to invade the world of Cefiro and uncover the secrets of its Pillar system, the source of that world's stability and power. Despite his role as a leader of this invasion force, Aguila is portrayed as a conflicted figure who is personally against the act of invasion itself, creating an internal tension between his duties and his beliefs.
His personality is defined by a calm, commanding presence, but he is not without compassion. This is most evident in his interactions with Hikaru Shidou, one of the titular Magic Knights. After capturing Hikaru and being held prisoner in Cefiro, Aguila develops a deep sympathy for her, which ultimately blossoms into romantic feelings. This connection to Hikaru plays a significant role in his personal journey and his shifting perspective on the conflict. His motivations are driven by a tragic circumstance: Aguila suffers from a serious illness. He seeks to become the new Pillar of Cefiro not for power or conquest, but as a means to enter a form of hibernation. In doing so, he hopes to take the suffering of the Pillar's destiny upon himself, framing his seemingly antagonistic goals as a desperate, sacrificial act.
In the narrative of the second season, Aguila acts as a primary antagonist and a rival force to the Magic Knights. His actions drive much of the conflict, from a large-scale invasion to personal duels. He engages the Magic Knights in combat to test their power, and his capture and subsequent escape lead directly to pivotal moments, including a confrontation with Lantis and a face-to-face meeting with Hikaru before the Pillar's Corona. His role evolves as he becomes a candidate to be chosen as the new Pillar, which forces the protagonists to reassess his intentions.
A key relationship is his friendship with Lantis, a character who was previously in Autozam and is now in Cefiro. This bond complicates his mission, as he is reluctant to harm an old friend. His relationship with Hikaru is the most transformative, shifting from that of enemy captor to a more sympathetic and emotionally charged connection, which influences his decisions and reveals his more vulnerable side. Aguila undergoes significant development as his true, non-malicious reasons for seeking the Pillar's power are revealed. He transitions from a mysterious invader to a tragic figure whose quest is born from a desire to escape a fatal illness and shoulder a lonely burden.
Regarding notable abilities, Aguila pilots a specialized robotic weapon known as the FTO. This machine is uniquely designed for him and is noted to be highly advanced, utilizing technology rather than magic. Its combat capabilities are comparable to the Rune Gods, the magical spirits piloted by the Magic Knights, allowing him to engage them on equal footing. His leadership and strategic mind are also key assets, allowing him to command the formidable NSX warship and orchestrate a large-scale interdimensional invasion.
