Description
Luz, known in her original language as Nova, is an anime-only character introduced in the second season of Magic Knight Rayearth. She was born as a shadow of Hikaru Shidou's heart, created in the instant Hikaru killed Princess Emeraude and was overwhelmed by grief, guilt, and self-hatred. Because Hikaru and her companions returned to Tokyo immediately after that battle, Nova was left alone in Cephiro without purpose. She was later found by Lady Debonair, a being born from the collective fears of Cephiro, who took her in as a daughter and manipulated her into believing that Hikaru would only find happiness by dying alongside those she loved. Nova's entire existence revolves around Hikaru: she hates everyone Hikaru loves and loves everything Hikaru hates. Her personality is unstable and childlike, often switching between childish affection and vicious threats. She is possessive, jealous, and cruel, yet deeply confused about her own will. For most of the story, she serves as a secondary antagonist, attacking Hikaru and her allies under Debonair's direction. She pilots her own Mashin named Regalia and uses fire-based magic identical to Hikaru's spells, including Flame Arrow and Red Lightning, and can fight with two glowing swords made of light. Her appearance mirrors Hikaru's, but she is slightly taller with pointy ears and long pink hair, and wears a purple leather suit with light armor. Key relationships include Hikaru, whom she both hates and loves in a twisted sense; Debonair, who exploits her; and Lantis, Umi, Fuu, and Eagle, whom Nova targets out of jealousy. As the story progresses, Nova is discarded by Debonair when she begins losing, leading to a crisis of identity. In the climax, Hikaru realizes that Nova is a part of herself and, instead of destroying her, embraces her, accepting that light and darkness must coexist. Nova, now representing a no-longer-needed feeling, willingly returns to Hikaru's heart. Her role highlights the theme of self-acceptance and the necessity of integrating one's darker emotions.
