Description
In the second season of the anime, the figure known as Presea is actually Presea's younger twin sister, Sierra. Presea was the foremost artisan, or Pharle, of Cephiro, a student of the sorcerer Clef who lived at the edge of the Forest of Silence with the creature Mokona and forged the legendary weapons of the mineral escudo for the Magic Knights. In the anime's first season she died shortly after completing those weapons, killed by one of the beasts summoned by Ascot. Sierra, who is also a skilled Pharle, takes her sister's place when the Magic Knights return to Cephiro, presenting herself as Presea so that Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, as well as Ascot, will not be burdened by guilt over Presea's death. Clef supports the deception by telling the Knights that Princess Emeraude's final wish revived those who died during her imprisonment, but in truth no one can bring the dead back to life, and the Knights never learn the truth.
Sierra is described as kind, cheerful, bubbly, and maternal, and she mimics her sister's manner so convincingly that almost no one questions her. Beneath that warm exterior she is melancholic and secretive, carrying private grief and the weight of her impersonation. In many ways she resembles Presea, who was playful, mischievous, and prone to losing herself in her own imagination yet also caring, honest, and deeply devoted to her duties as a creator of weapons.
Her central motivation is compassion: she wants to spare the people who loved Presea the pain of her loss and to continue her sister's legacy by helping the Magic Knights with their mission. Like Presea, she is secretly in love with Clef, and this shared feeling helps her inhabit the role so naturally, though she conceals her own emotions even when Clef confronts her about why she is pretending. Only Clef, Mokona, and the sorceress Alcyone recognize that she is not Presea; Alcyone perceives the deception partly because Sierra's feelings for Clef betray her.
Within the second season's story, Sierra acts as the Knights' ally and support, tending to their equipment as Presea once did. Her skill as a Pharle nearly matches her sister's: she cannot forge new weapons from escudo the way Presea could, but she is able to restore damaged ones. This proves important when Hikaru's sword is shattered by Nova, and Sierra repairs it, allowing Hikaru to fight again. The physical distinction between the twins is a small feather-shaped birthmark on Sierra's chest, the only visible clue that she is not her sister.
Sierra's relationships are defined by what she hides. She loves Clef, who knows her identity from the start and permits her to keep the secret. She protects the Magic Knights from grief even at the cost of never being recognized for herself, and she shields Ascot, who blames himself for killing her sister, from further suffering. Her quiet devotion and sorrow deepen over the course of the season: she openly declares her love for Clef in front of Alcyone, referring to him only as that person, and her real name is not revealed until near the end of the series. Sierra's story is ultimately one of selfless, unacknowledged kindness, a woman who chooses to be mistaken for her dead sister so that others may heal.
