Description
Fuu Hououji is one of the three central protagonists in the second story arc of Magic Knight Rayearth. A 14-year-old middle school student born on December 12, she stands approximately 156 centimeters tall and has short blonde hair and green eyes, usually framed by a pair of round glasses. Her family consists of her parents and an older sister named Kuu. In her life on Earth, Fuu is a dedicated member of her school’s kyudo club, specializing in Japanese archery. Her academic strengths lie in mathematics, and she enjoys reading and computer programming as hobbies, with a professional aspiration to become a systems engineer.
Fuu is defined by her calm, polite, and highly analytical personality, often serving as the primary strategist and the voice of reason within the trio of Magic Knights. Her intelligence is predominantly academic and logical, which at times leads her to state the obvious with a bluntness that provides a subtle, dry humor. Despite her reserved and kind demeanor, she possesses a strong moral core and a sharp perceptiveness that allows her to see through deception. While she dislikes unnecessary conflict, her loyalty to her friends is fierce, and she will fight passionately to protect them. In the second series, Fuu is more mature, but she also grapples with deep emotional guilt. Upon returning to Cephiro, she is confronted with the painful truth that her mission to save the land resulted in the death of Princess Emeraude, the sister of Ferio, the man she loves. This burden of guilt is a central part of her character arc, causing her significant self-doubt and sorrow as she reconciles her feelings for Ferio with her role in his sister's fate.
As the Magic Knight of Wind, Fuu's role in the story expands beyond that of a supporter. Her key relationships deepen significantly, most notably with Ferio, the wandering swordsman who was Emeraude's brother. Their bond, which began in the first series, grows stronger amid the chaos of Cephiro's collapse, and his unwavering affection for her helps her overcome her self-blame. She also forms a significant connection with Lady Aska of Fahren. After being captured and forced into an archery contest, Fuu not only wins her freedom with her exceptional skill but also befriends Aska by compassionately revealing the harsh reality of the Pillar system, showing her ability to turn rivals into allies. Her relationship with her fellow Magic Knights, Hikaru Shidou and Umi Ryuuzaki, remains the bedrock of her character; she consistently devises plans to ensure their safety and provides emotional stability during their missions.
Throughout the second arc, Fuu undergoes notable development, moving from a guilt-ridden girl to a resolved and active participant in shaping Cephiro's future. Her development is reflected in her new armor, which prioritizes mobility over defense. Her abilities as a Magic Knight are predominantly wind-based and supportive in nature, though she possesses effective offensive capabilities. Her magical repertoire includes Iyashi no Kaze (Healing Wind) to mend injuries, Mamori no Kaze (Protection Wind) to create defensive barriers, and Imashime no Kaze (Admonition Wind) to immobilize opponents without causing harm. Her primary offensive spell is Midori no Shippuu (Green Gale or Emerald Gale), which unleashes concentrated, blade-like gusts of wind from her hands. Complementing her magic, Fuu is an expert archer, and her signature weapon is a legendary sword forged from the mineral Escudo, which becomes impossibly heavy for anyone other than herself to wield. She is the Knight who awakens the Rune God Windam, a bird-like divine being of wind, and can combine its power with those of her friends to perform the ultimate attacks, Spiral Flash and the Flash Sword.
