Description
Morty Oyamada, known in the original Japanese version as Manta Oyamada, is a central character in the anime and manga series Shaman King. He is introduced as a seventh-grade student at Shinra Private Academy who comes from the wealthy Oyamada family, owners of the Oyamada Electronics Company. Despite his family's financial success, Morty is a modest, intelligent, and studious boy who always carries a large book with him, referred to as the Manjien in the Japanese version, which serves as a compendium of knowledge. In the English adaptation, his book is a collection of ghost stories, reflecting his fascination with the supernatural.
Morty is physically very short, a trait that often causes him to be mistaken for a koropokkuru, a shy nature spirit from northern Japan. His small stature makes him appear younger than his actual age and is a source of sensitivity for him. He is highly expressive and prone to bouts of panic, fear, or excitement, but he also demonstrates genuine curiosity and loyalty.
From the beginning, Morty possesses a sixth sense that allows him to see spirits, even though he is not a trained shaman. This ability leads him to encounter Yoh Asakura, a transfer student who reveals himself to be a shaman. After Yoh defends him from a gang led by Ryu Unemiya, Morty becomes Yoh's first true friend and the first human to accept Yoh without prejudice. He serves as the narrator of the series, providing perspective on events for the audience.
Morty's primary motivation is to support Yoh in his quest to become the Shaman King. Despite his own lack of shamanic powers for much of the story, he remains a steadfast companion, accompanying Yoh and his fiancée, Anna Kyoyama, throughout the Shaman Fight. His role is largely that of an observer and researcher, using his intelligence and his book to gather information. He often finds himself caught in dangerous situations, such as being used as a hostage by Faust VIII during Yoh's match, which spurs Yoh's anger and determination.
Key relationships include his deep friendship with Yoh, which is the emotional anchor of the series. He also develops a bond with the samurai spirit Amidamaru and, in the anime adaptation, with the spirit Mosuke, Amidamaru's childhood friend. Mosuke becomes Morty's guardian ghost, allowing Morty to temporarily become a shaman. His relationship with Anna is one of respect and occasional fear, as she is strict but ultimately shares his goal of helping Yoh.
Over the course of the series, Morty undergoes significant development. Initially a timid and easily frightened boy, he grows into a more courageous and resilient individual, willing to face danger for his friends. In the later stages of the story, particularly in the anime, he discovers latent shamanic abilities. He learns to perform an oversoul by merging Mosuke's spirit with his laptop, creating a hammer-like weapon that he uses to defeat Hao's familiars during the final battle. In the manga, however, he does not become a shaman and remains a non-combatant, though he continues to support Yoh in other ways.
Notable abilities include his enhanced perception of spirits, his extensive knowledge, and his eventual capacity for spirit fusion and oversoul creation in the anime. He also demonstrates surprising resilience and resourcefulness when under pressure. By the end of the series, Morty has matured into a confident young man who has grown a full centimeter taller, attends university, and researches ways to blend shamanism with business, symbolizing his continued connection to the spiritual world while embracing a practical future.
