TV-Series
Description
Ryunosuke Umemiya, known as Bokuto no Ryu or Wooden Sword Ryu, begins the series as the leader of a small but devoted gang of delinquents who terrorize their local neighborhood. His most defining physical features are his muscular build, his exaggerated 1970s-inspired fashion of white suits and dark shirts with oversized collars, and most notably his impressively tall pompadour hairstyle, which is frequently cut off in combat only to be regrown or reshaped into different forms such as a heart or a V-shape. His nickname derives from the wooden sword he always carries. Despite his intimidating appearance and initial role as a minor antagonist, his core driving philosophy is the search for a Best Place, a location where he and his outcast friends can truly belong and be themselves.

Bokuto no Ryu possesses a personality marked by sharp contrasts. On the surface, he appears hot-headed, not particularly bright, and obsessed with his appearance and romantic interests. However, beneath this exterior lies a deeply passionate and loyal individual who wears his heart on his sleeve. He is philosophical in his own way and is driven by a powerful sense of loyalty to his friends, a trait so strong that it can overcome supernatural obstacles, such as melting a magical ice attack through sheer burning willpower. After meeting Yoh Asakura, his motivations shift from self-centered goals to a devoted support of his new friends. While his personal aspiration becomes to become a master chef, his primary goal in the Shaman Fight is ultimately to support Yoh's quest to become Shaman King, believing Yoh would use the power to create a better world that could serve as a true Best Place for everyone.

Bokuto no Ryu’s role in the story evolves significantly from a defeated bully to a core member of the main group. He is initially beaten by Yoh for harassing Manta Oyamada, an event that sparks his fascination with the world of shamans. Desperate to learn these powers, he becomes a live-in student at Yoh’s home, where he is quickly put to work handling chores by Anna Kyoyama. His latent shamanic abilities are awakened when he is possessed by the vengeful spirit of a bandit named Tokagero. After being saved from this possession by Yoh and his friends, Tokagero becomes his loyal guardian ghost and partner, transforming Ryu from a wannabe tough guy into a genuine shaman. From this point forward, he acts as a steadfast ally, joining the team in major battles, including the rescue of Ren Tao in China and the main tournament in America.

Key relationships define his journey. His bond with Yoh Asakura is the most significant, as Yoh’s peaceful nature and strength inspire Ryu to change his life. He develops a deep and unwavering loyalty to Yoh, considering him a true friend and leader. He also forms a close, brother-like bond with Yoh’s son, Hana, in the sequel series, acting as a caretaker and big brother figure. His relationship with his own gang members, particularly Muscle Punch and Ball Boy, highlights his leadership; they remain fiercely devoted to him, and their pleas help save him from Tokagero’s control. His relationship with his spirit, Tokagero, starts as a parasitic possession but matures into a genuine partnership built on mutual respect and shared growth as they train together.

The character’s development is one of the most pronounced in the series, transforming from a neighborhood bully into a heroic figure. After deciding to become a shaman, he undergoes rigorous training, either under Yoh’s grandfather Yohmei in the manga or Yoh’s father Mikihisa in the original anime, to master his abilities. He becomes a competent and courageous fighter, earning his place as a member of the Funbari Onsen Team in the Shaman Fight. His personal growth culminates in his post-series role, where he puts aside his delinquent past entirely to become the head chef at the Funbari Onsen, a peaceful home and business run by Yoh’s family, suggesting he has finally found his Best Place.

As a shaman, Bokuto no Ryu fights alongside his ghostly partner, Tokagero, the spirit of a bandit. His furyoku, or spiritual power, is measured at approximately 85,000. His abilities center on the use of Oversoul, a technique where a spirit is fused with a physical medium to create a powerful weapon or entity. His primary medium is his wooden sword, the bokuto. His notable techniques include several advanced Oversouls. Jigokuryu Benitokage forms a chainsaw-like weapon around his sword. Ame no Mura Kumo transforms Tokagero into a multi-headed serpent that can attack and defend from multiple angles. Yamata no Orochi Go is a larger, motorized version of this serpent. His final and most refined Oversoul is Sashimi Bocho Susanorou, which takes the form of a sushi knife capable of cutting through virtually anything with incredible speed and precision. Another unique ability is Oversoul Big Thumb, a technique where he fuses Tokagero into his thumb to summon a friendly truck driver named Billy, who provides transportation.
