Description
Fausto VIII, whose full name is Johann Fausto VIII, is a character from Germany and a direct descendant of the legendary Doctor Faustus, the figure from the German tale who made a pact with the devil. A tall, thin man with blond hair and blue eyes, his most defining physical traits are the dark circles under his eyes and his violet-colored lips, which are the result of chronic sleep deprivation and physical strain. His appearance is further marked by what seems to be a different color of skin stitched onto his chest and torso, and he often wears a long white doctor's coat.

At his core, Fausto is an incredibly brilliant but obsessive medical doctor whose entire being is defined by his love for his late wife, Eliza. In his youth, Fausto was a withdrawn child until he met Eliza, a girl suffering from a fatal, incurable illness. She was the only one outside his family who showed him care, which inspired him to dedicate his life to medicine to save her. After twenty years of study, he succeeded in curing her, and they married, opening a small clinic together. Their happiness was tragically cut short when a burglar broke into their clinic and fatally shot Eliza in the head.

Her death shattered Fausto, and he became obsessed with the impossible dream of bringing her back. When conventional medicine failed, he turned to the forbidden arts of necromancy written by his ancestor, becoming a shaman to enter the Shaman Fight, a tournament held every 500 years, with the goal of becoming the Shaman King to resurrect Eliza. This single-minded devotion makes him the embodiment of dedication; he is willing to do anything, no matter the cost, to protect and care for her memory. He is a very detailed and patient person who thinks scientifically, but this demeanor vanishes when the subject of Eliza is involved; he does not tolerate any criticism, insults, or threats directed at her.

In his first appearance during the preliminaries, Fausto serves as an antagonist to the protagonist Yoh Asakura. Using a cemetery as his battlefield, he displays his macabre talents by reanimating an army of skeletons with his necromancy, even using Yoh's friend Manta as a hostage to provoke his opponent. His most prominent relationship forms after this fight when Anna Kyoyama recognizes his medical skills and promises to help him be with Eliza if he aids Yoh. He accepts and becomes a loyal member of Team Funbari Onsen, serving as its healer. His key relationships include his spirit ally, Eliza, whose skeleton he initially carries with him but whose soul is later summoned by Anna, allowing them to be together. He also has a pet dog named Frankenstein, whose bones he sometimes uses.

Fausto undergoes significant development from a desperate, rage-fueled antagonist to a calm and gentle ally. After Anna helps him connect with Eliza's soul, he loses his purpose for revenge, finding new meaning in protecting his friends. Later in the story, through intense training, he masters the ultimate techniques, even gaining the ability to truly resurrect the dead, a feat he had previously deemed impossible. This power allows him to revive fallen comrades, cementing his role as a crucial support for the team.

As a necromancer, Fausto's most important shamanic ability is reanimating the dead. His primary technique, Bone Dead Reborn, summons nearby spirits to inhabit buried skeletons, which he can then fully command with minimal expenditure of his own spiritual energy, called Furyoku. He can use these skeletons for a variety of attacks, such as forming a Bone Shell for defense or combining thousands into a massive entity known as the Giant Calcium Giant. His medical expertise is equally formidable; he is a master surgeon capable of performing grueling operations on himself in the middle of battle. He heavily uses morphine before fights to completely numb himself, allowing him to perform acts like extracting his own broken leg bone and replacing it without feeling pain. His most powerful Oversouls are Mephisto E and Eliza Operien, the latter of which manifests an operating table and allows him to heal any wound and even resurrect the dead.
